Not likely it is still alive and in that close! Also it would be somewhat dangerous to be in the water with one that was less than dead!

99% Pretty darned sure he's stone dead. You wouldn't want to hold that bill with out a glove if he was still alive. It has a very agressive texture like rough sandpaper. If that fish isn't dead he's really close. Nice catch either way. It is real common in parts of Mexico to land sails rather than release. I noticed this more in Zihua / Ixtapa. C&R has caught on more in Cabo, but is still common at the city docks.

I caught sails a couple of times on seperate trips down it PV, colors were fantastic. Mine were both smaller then your friends. I also would have to say Mr. Sailfish is in fish heaven

Still new to posting, but hopefully here is a picture of a swordfish. This one was caught in June 2004 while fishing on the Swordfish King out of Ft. Lauderdale. I can’t remember all the details on the fish, but I think it was in the 80-90lb range.

Hank – Unfortunately I was not the lucky one to reel that fish in, it was one of my customers (I caught a shark, does that count...). But the trip was a kick nonetheless. We left the dock at around 7:30 PM and traveled roughly 25 miles offshore returning at about 4:00 in the morning, fishing through the night in shorts and tee shirts! Ahhh the warm weather .

The approach to catching these fish is what’s wild. We used fresh fish and dropped them straight down 200-300 feet (we were in about 900 feet of water). Once the gear hit the targeted depth we tied a balloon/float to the line and then taped a green glow stick to the float. We then let out about another 100-150 feet of line and just drifted in the current with the floats tailing off to the side of the boat. Its pitch black with only the nav lights on, and its kind of like bobber fishing. We just sat there watching these glow sticks dancing around the ocean, waiting for one to disappear.

It was so cool. We were watching the glow sticks when we noticed one of them was missing. Within seconds the reel started to scram…Fish On! The battle lasted roughly 45 minutes. No catch and release here….meat in the freezer!!

It really is fun and I would recommend it to all.

I was staying at a resort in Mazatlan a few years back and there was a big pool party and barbecue planned for one evening. The menu included fresh caught marlin and other fresh fish. As the party started, the hotel employees paraded this large fish around the pool area and all the hotel guests were oohing and aahing and were so excited about fresh barbecued marlin. My wife and I had a great laugh because we knew the fish was a sailfish and all the locals consider them a trash fish. The not-so-bright tourists didn't know any better and I suspect the hotel employees were also getting a big chuckle at the expense of the paying customers. My wife and I both had the fresh dorado and skipped the sailfish.

Swordfish is proly the best fish you'll ever eat......IF it's fresh, and cooked properly. Close your eyes, and you would almost mistake it for fillet mignon!

Phil----popeye is right-on. Swordfish is absolutely my favorite fish. Tuna is great, dorado is good but swordfish is the best.
Marlin aint bad either, I can't wait for Feb when I go to Cabo again.

I had swordfish at a restuarant once and it was indeed very very good, very dense very meaty like steak or shark if u have ever had that. I bought some at Safeway one time and tried it and it was very strong tasting...like ammonia kinda, bet it wasnt very fresh . My former boss who caught that sailfish said it was around 200lbs btw

Phil – The previous posts are exactly right…..it is a dense meaty fish. My favorite is blackened and seared (tuna is great this way too). Makes my mouth start watering just thinking about it!

I bought a book the other day that lists fish in the Pacific Ocean and gives all sorts of data about each fish. Under the "Edible" column, it ranked Swordfish as excellent. Few other fish were in that category.

Being a man of humble means, I probably won't be heading out on a swordfish trip in the near future. Can this prized fish be purchased at a fish market here in Oregon?

Yes it can. I would phone the fish market to verify, but it should be available.
