Kaboom-Plop-Kabling!
It was a SLOW day out on the S.I. WMA for us the other day (last Friday).
The Ducks were there, but in limited numbers, and it wasn't the usual fast paced action that's sometimes seen at this spot.
Still, just waiting them out and grinding away produced a limit of Mallards for me.
On the last Drake that swung in I made a nice one shot kill, the Duck lying feet up in the water about 40 yards out.
Sparky made the retrieve
When she got ashore I was pleasantly surprised by what she had to give me.
Even though it was slow, the day ended nicely when the Ducks abruptly stopped flying around 11:30.

Nice work on the birds, and a good dog to boot!

Very nice Bill!! I'm throughly jealous over that band.
I wonder how many dogs have sat in that very same tree trying to escape the water?
Were you hunting solo? Again, very nice job.

Nice work Bill! Love the pics.
Hey, email me the code format you used to display AND link the pics.
Been trying to figure out how to do that w/ the new forum software.

Ya know I looked at that tree...have looked at it several times over the years...
And thought, "Hmm...wonder if, during the off season I should come out here with some tools, 2x4, and slab of 3/4" Oudoor Ply, nails and fashion a nice little doggie platform right there?!!"
I know there are plenty of our dogs who'd just love to have that to sit on when the water's up.
On my fellow hunters, nope, not solo. I had a newbie hunter with me and Miss Lil along also. My newbie hunter is getting better at his calling and I let him do most of it while I ran the Spinner. Miss Lil ended up sandwiched in between. Newbie got a couple of Ducks and missed some too. (It's out to the Skeet Field with him this Summer!). Newbie had to take off for late morning classes, so then Lil ran the Spinner and I called.
I was almost finished and only needed 2 more Mallards to be done. So she let me shoot, then I was going to call and run the Spinner for her and let her shoot.
But with 1 Duck to go, things just DIED! (They weren't ever really "going" for where we were )
Finally, that final Greenhead snuck in and I dropped him and was done.
We hung around for another 1-1/2 hr.s but NOTHING!
Finally she said, "Time to fold 'em!"

Re: Kaboom-Plop-Kabling!
Congrats on the birds & bling!!!!
It is amazing the way the WMA can just DIE at noon. Over the years I've had VERY few good shoots that lasted into the afternoon Even in the wind
Anyway, GREAT JOB.........
P.S. We should still get together over the holidays.

Yes it really IS amazing how the WMA doesn't shoot well, usually after 11 a.m.
I'd say I've had ~10 hunts in >20 yr.s out there that were any good in the afternoon. Usually it's been somehow connected to a VERY Stormy day. That or extreme cold; everything frozen up.
I've only had 1 good afternoon hunt this year out there, that, about a month ago out on Rentenar.
It's strange too, because there are so many places that have really GOOD afternoon shoots. Even out on the island.
It just doesn't happen very often on the WMA.
