Building a boat/toys garage?
Looking for a little advise on building a free standing garage for my boat and all my toys. Too much clutter and want to protect the investments.
Items to store:
20' I/O boat
Riding mower and cart
rototiller
Garden tools
Bikes
Fishing gear (lots!)
Soon to get a couple of ATV's
Also have a slide in camper. not necessary inside, but at least a lean to for protection.
Lots of flat land to build on.
CCR's prohibit pole barns.
Any ideas on how big to go (20x24?)
What would this cost? Don't want cheap, but $ is a factor.
Permits (Clack Co.)? I don't have a ton of time with a busy work schedule, but do want to do some of the work to keep costs down.
Any sage advise out there? Thanks.

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
Fish Mojo,
The best approach would be to figure out the minimum size that you need to house the stuff you have...and then double or triple the size. I am not kidding! I have never heard anyone say that they built their shop too big. On the other hand you almost always hear that the shop should have been bigger. Mine is 24' x 24'. A 20' x 8' sled plus at least two feet on all sides to walk around it will take up at least half of the shop. If you add up the rest of the stuff you have in mind, plus work benches, cabinets, and general crapola, you have a full shop already. The bottom line...go big.

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
20X24 is on the small side. That is about the size of a regular garage and a 20' boat may not fit plus you need to leave room for growth (larger boat in the future). I had a 30X36 and at times it was too small and I only had a drift boat and a 1968 Bronco in it plus misc. other stuff. 30X36 is the smallest I would go with. In the case of a shop/garage, build the largest you can afford and feel comfortable with. Put lots of elect. outlets in it and at least 10 or12 foot sides. I am a bit envious, I wish I had a place to build one now for my boat.

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
I built mine 28' x 40'...and it is too small A 5th wheel, 18' boat, tractor...it is full. If I was to do it again, I would make it 44' x 40' Room for more toys. Don't worry, you will fill it!
Have no idea on cost. Best plan is to sketch out what you want, then get some bids.

Keep an eye out for prefab steel buildings. Usually you can get a new 30' x 50' for about $8,000 sometimes you can find them for less.

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
i have a 24x40, it is to small with a 12x40 leanto on one side. if i was to do it again, i would build a 32x48 with 12' side walls and a 16x48 leanto on one side.

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
I've done two buildings from websteel: a 20X24 and a 40X64. They go together pretty easy (with some help of friends and family) and are very nice. websteel.com

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
I had a 30 x 36 built a few years back. If I was to do it again. it would be be 40 x 46. One think to remember is the demensions are the outside not the inside. So a 20 x 24 yeilds a 19 x 23 usable space with 6" walls. One thing I was glad I did was over size doors. To fit taller things inside. Another thing you may want to think about is resale value down the road. My ex-neighbor down the road built his Just big enough for his motorhome to fit. Two years later decided he wanted a newer motorhome and what do you know it was 6 inches to tall to fit where the old one did.

Re: Building a boat/toys garage?
i agree with what has been said so far.mine is 24x48,i dont have a boat or camper and wish mine was bigger!!
wife parks her subuaru on one end then with work benchs and shelves, riding mower, push mower and other junk---- well just wish it was bigger.
also is this the only shop/storage building you will have.if you only intend to put these things out there and forget about them till u need them, maybe you could get away with not being to big,but do you plan on using it as work area, then you dont want to be crowded.

A 53' container holds a lot of stuff out of sight.
