2006 coyote havest numbers
how have you done so far: my success to date is 5 confirmed, 3 probable, but unconfirmed, two clear misses. this is one of my best years. i passed shooting several while deer hunting, not wanting to ruin my deer hunt. saw lots of coyotes in the west three forks area, near 5points. lots of coyotes in the sheepsheads

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
I shot 1 while deer hunting this year (he had chased a chipmunk up an old snag and was trying to figure out how to climb it!). I have not had a chance to go out and do any calling yet this year...I can't wait to go as that is great fun to call one right into your lap.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
Grrrrr.... I haven't even been out this year. I've had sooooo many things come up, and still don't have a window to get "over there." My turn is coming though, and if I haven't forgotten everything I know, them dogs better watch out!
Glad you guys are getting a few.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
If you're just counting this "season", I think I'm at 4 or 5. I kept seeing a bunch during deer season (westside) and I shot two that were just targets of opportunity, plus I found another that was lying dead. No marks that I could find anywhere.
I called in one that backdoored me at 12 yards and I couldn't get a shot, plus I had another at 20 yards in some thick timber and brush that didn't give me a shot. All on the westside. So far this year I haven't missed a single coyote. We'll see how long that trend continues, but my accurate sporter-weight .243 has been pure poison on coyotes whereas my heavy barreled tack-driving .22-250 caused way too many misses due to being so cumbersome to handle.
I saw lots of coyotes in the Beattys Butte unit back in August while I was blackpowder hunting. If I'd ditched the antelope and hunted coyotes instead I'd have enough for everyone.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
During a few deer scouting trips we saw remarkable amounts of coyotes running around agricultural fields. Some days we would see 30+ different coyotes.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
Three, one shot, shocked the heck out of me! My 7mm. All standing there together. All males. Now explain that to me. Second in line was devestated by the bullett. Thrid I think died of shock. Never really found the entrance wound. No blood to speak of. During early Oct deer hunt! Maybe 50 yards!

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
A three for one!!!!! Wow, that would be a shot.
I know last year, I had the double come in and I messed up with my caller and didn't get them to stop where I wanted, but for a second I had both lined up in the scope, but just couldn't get the trigger pulled. Ended up with nothing but a little bit of hair and meat.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
This year has been OK so far for me. I have killed about 6 on "my" Ranch in Central Oregon and just returned last night from a 4 day hunt in West Texas. (Does that count?)
In a four day period I called in 19 coyotes, shot at 14 and killed 11! That does not count the two bobcats I collected and one wild hog!! What a fantastic trip....story and pictures to follow!

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
So what do we consider the coyote season? I kinda go from the summer, until they drop their pups.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
The last five weeks have marked my only experiences calling and targeting coyotes. I have only had two come to my nine stands. I passed on the first because it would not have been an ethical shot with the loads I was using in my shotgun. The second I never saw until I was leaving the stand. These have all been in the valley (on the few strips of huntable public land I have been able to find).

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
What do you guys do with the yotes after you 'em? Do you just leave them for the other yotes and magpies, or do you carry them out and dispose of them somewhere?
I wanna dump a few, but I'm not sure what to do with them after we dump them?

3 of 4 are no longer with us.
Have not called yet, just targets of opportunity.
BBQ'd coyote backstrap is excellent!

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
If you can shoot them close to home, you go back out and collect the trophy skull once it is cleaned up by nature. This one ought to just about be ready. By the way, this is the exit wound. I would say the 55 grains of smoking hot lead shampoo did the trick on this one. 110 yards over the fence behind the house.

Had two dogs in the spotlight out my back door last night but couldn't find the mag for my 10/22 in time and they got into the canal.

Re: 2006 coyote havest numbers
I hunt with Rusty, and we have seen 2 while hunting, and they were like 500 yards away, we thought we were busted but we got one of them to come down the hill towards us, my first shots at a coyote were at 350 yards at a running coyote, things didn't work out for me that day, but he has taught me how to coyote hunt, and we are planning on going out again soon,
