Default Oregon Desert Mule Deer Hunt Success

I haven't noticed too many posts lately about hard to draw tags for Oregon muzzleloader mule deer, so I thought I would share this story with you guys. My dad and his best friend put in for these desirable hunts every year. This year his friend was lucky enough after eleven years to draw an exceptional choice. They put in the proper preperation by scouting the terrain of the fairly small unit earlier in the year while they were over east for archery elk. They also went over several days before season to locate some quality bucks that were worth harvesting.

On the second day of season my dad rattled into muzzeloader range one of the three top bucks that they had located before the season started. Preperation payed off and his friend harvested a buck of a lifetime. The buck was a symetrical 5x5 that will score around 180.

Cool, thanks.

I know a guy that drew a Hart Mt muzzle loader tag this year. I think it took him like 8 or 10 years saving points, and he struck out.

Big congradulations are in order!

Hard work and a little luck as well.

I too waited 9 years for this tag, only to be defeated by unseasonalby warm weather. If it does not get cold, most of the deer stay on the refuge side of the road. This year it has been in single didgits in Frenchglen for the last couple of weeks. The deer move up into the hills to stay warm.

We got a couple of bucks, but nothing to write home about.

I believe so long as you don't use rifle primers, use blackpowder, use bullets or balls, and use open sites that don't have fiber in them you are OK to use an inline according to the regs. Here is what it says about muzzleloaders:

MUZZLELOADER
Scopes (permanent and detachable), fiber optics sights, sights that use artificial light or energy, and sights that enhance, gather, or concentrate
natural light are not allowed during muzzleloader-only seasons and 600 series hunts where there is a weapon restriction of shotgun/muzzleloader
only or archery/muzzleloader only. Open and peep sights made from alloys, plastic, or other materials that do not have the properties described
above are legal sights.

It is illegal to hunt with jacketed bullets, sabots, and bullets with plastic or synthetic bases during muzzleloader-only seasons and 600 series hunts
where there is a weapon restriction of shotgun/muzzleloader only or archery/muzzleloader only. Round balls and conical lead or lead alloy bullets
with a length that does not exceed twice the diameter, and cloth, paper or felt patches are allowed.

It is illegal to hunt with centerfire primers as an ignition source during muzzleloader-only seasons and 600 series hunts where there is a weapon
restriction of shotgun/muzzleloader only or archery/muzzleloader only.

It is illegal to hunt with pelletized powders or propellants during muzzleloader-only seasons and 600 series hunts where there is a weapon restriction
of shotgun/muzzleloader only or archery/muzzleloader only. Granular (loose) black powder and black powder substitutes are the only legal
propellants during muzzleloader-only seasons and 600 series hunts where there is a weapon restriction of shotgun/muzzleloader only or archery/
muzzleloader only.

No other firearm may be used for hunting during a muzzleloader-only season. (See definition page 85)
Muzzleloading firearms with revolving actions are prohibited during muzzleloader-only seasons and 600 series hunts where there is a weapon
restriction of shotgun/muzzleloader only or archery/muzzleloader only.

Inlines are legal as long as the ignition is exposed to the weather. This is a common misconception many people have.

As I have heard it the brass cap must be visible when it's ready to fire.
So my homemade underhammer action is legal; even though you must turn the rifle upside down to see the cap.

That's awesome to hear someone is out there doing what needs to be done to harvest an animal of that quality. There are a lot of people that don't understand the importance of scouting.
Great job and nice buck

Great job to the hunters on a great hunt. To take a photo before taking the animal shows the kind of level headed self control being used.

That's a great hunt to share with a good friend. I hope to have the points in a few more years for that hunt.

Looks like it was a snow free season there. I've seen photos of other hunts where the snow is thick and cold.
