I made this post on another site and thought some RT/ Jennie sorts might benefit from it:
I tried to post this in response to the thread down below, but didn't have any success so I'm starting a new thread.
For US topo maps (including Alaska) on-line and downloadable/ printable in acceptable quality, try
www.topozone.com. It takes a while to get the right spot(s) with the right level of enlargement but if you're patient you can get just about anywhere in the US, free.
US Geological Service online facilities for finding maps:
http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/findmaps.html. Maps ordered from the USGS typically cost $5 each with a $4 handling charge per order.
For Canada,
http://nrcan.gc.ca/topographic.html enables you to order 1:50,000 ("NTS" green) topo maps for C$9 each, while the TRIM maps (higher resolution at 1:20,000) are found at
www.landdata.gov.bc.ca/ (for British Columbia only and C$7 each)
Hope this helps
