Default Pink Work Questions

Guys & Gals, having read the recent posts on Pink worms I have a few follow up questions:

1. How is the rig fished when using the worm with a painted black diver? I am a bank fisherman/maggot. Do you work it upstream, downstream, cross etc?

2. When rigging the worm on a jig under a float, how is the worm attached to the jig head? I assume a weighted jig head is used.

3. What pound test line is used for Springer's?

Thanks,

Dave

On a jighead the worm is threaded on the hook about an inch into the body. If you use a curly tail worm have the tail turned the opposite direction of the hook.

Whoops, sorry Dave. Thought this was a subject on Pink Work, not worms. Was just curious.

Seriously, I haven't tried the things for springers, but I know they can be fond of white curly tail grubs about 3 inches long. I haven't tried these on jigs, but they are a "way out" when drift fishing and you're out of eggs. I've only caught a couple of salmon over the years on these, but then I don't use them much either.

I've never used pink worms for salmon, but I've used them effectively for steelhead. I usually will only use them when there's a bait restriction on a river (I fish the upper Hoh alot and there's usually a bait restriction up there).

What I do is this, I set up a normal driftsetup, swivel with about a 3 foot leader with a whole pink steelie worm threaded through two inline hooks. Then I pinch on lead on my trailer line off swivel. Then, I add a bobber above the swivel. Basically I let it drift through the slot with a more natural floating technique. I've found on a jig, it'll sit at the same level majority of the time. When you have the excess leader, the worm will float up and down with current. I haven't read the other post, but will do it now. I hope this helps.

With a black diver it is fished like a boat fisherman would fish a hot shot. The worm is put on a leader and tied to the underbody of the diver. There are a couple different ways to rig the worm for the diver depending on the number of hooks. You can fish this diver rigging with a side planer for a slow presentation. SHhh..

Anybody use bass worm hooks for their pink worm fishing? I rig mine with the hook near the tail.

One April while trolling night crawlers on a lead head back to the dock below the John Day, I hooked a 25lb springer. Right away I knew it wasn't a walleye! Anybody used worms for salmon? Might be the next big thing!

Nightcrawlers are actually a well kept secret for natives tipped on a jig!

I used to use a lot of night crawlers for Jack Silvers and Jack Chinook...even picked up an adult or two...below Rivermill on the Clack...about 20 years ago...
