Sounds awesome, I love being with someone when they are hooked into their first steelie. It is such a rush, and they are usually so excited. Nice work!

Default Nestucca Natives!

Fished the Nestucca yesterday from Farmers to Cloverdale with a friend that doesn't fish much. I decided to pull plugs all the way and get a good aerobic work out. Water was low and clear. Easy way for my friend to hook and play a fish I thought. Had four take downs, two on and one wild fish that gave my friend all he could handle and more! This fish absolutely killed the plug, shot staight up river by my boat like it was shot out of a rifle, ripped 75 feet of line off in seconds and tangled the line around bushes hanging over some fast water. I knew we were in trouble because I had on barbless siwash hooks. Yes we lost it but got the plug back. Would have been nice to get a picture of this mean boy or girl. These big natives are a thing of beauty so let's really make an extra effort to not harm them. It gave my friend something to talk about for the rest of his life. He really got his a$$ kicked! I'm sure this rain will start bringing the natives in, I can't wait.

Chinook Hunter, the ramp is still bad. You have to back your boat down the right side of the ramp. I don't think there is any plans to fix the ramp. I'm not sure who we should contact but I think I will make a few calls next week.

Hey Rags. Took Garrick and his girlfriend Julie down from 1st to Farmer. I got a beautiful 12-13lb native hen right under the bridge. Hammered a metalic green #30. I worked extra hard to get Julie's rod to bury, as she has never caught a steelhead either. I can't wait to get her into one! We NEED to plan a group float, maybe 4th bridge in a couple weeks?

The Farmer Cr. Ramp is the only ramp maintained by ODFW on the Nestucca, the rest being maintained by Tillamook County. With all the budget cuts and talk of hatchery closures, the ramp at Farmer Creek is the least of their concerns. The ramp isn't that bad if you have 4 wheel drive and are careful!

Hey Marty. Yes, 4 wheel drive is very helpful! A quick 'fix' that I would like to see is to cut the rebar down to a nub. Once you get your trailer swung down to the water, your right rear tire gets awfly close to those tire poppers.

Hey Gary, would love to get a float together. Matt and I and you and Garrick. Matt can only go on weekends. Give me a call or let me know on the board. Congrats on the fish.

I would be more than happy to pitch in. I could maybe borrow my bud's torch. How about a 'Farmer Creek boat launch recovery day'. Wow, this could turn into something good!

Hey Gary, what's with the torch thang big guy? Heck, you and Garrick can just grab the rebar and bend them over between the cement blocks. If ya need any help just give me a call bud, and I will come down and cheer you guys on from the sidelines . - Steve

Edit: If you back down slowly on the downriver side there is plenty of clearance. But it would be best to get that out of there. When we pulled Gary's boat out in late Dec. though, he did get his tires real close to the rebar (but he's pretty challenged though ).

Could take up a collection off the board ---i can throw in 20 bucks --never even been to that river yet that is -----------if already in cohoots with the engineer that is 3/4 of the battle just need the plans and some backs and a few green backs the rest is easy----------fire it up with some calcium -- you was sayin theres a prob on the up river side-------can a person dig down 3-4 ft on that side and pour it full to help keep it there---also what ive seen on the solduck and that is a type of wash board ramp --looks to handle the high water well

let me know if you get the ok on the work ----will donate some cash and if have the time will be willin to donate a day or two

with the cut backs looks like it be coming to alot of this-------
just cant waite till the whole ramp is gone cause then the paper work really starts and the bigger moneys

Marty,
Let us know what you find out. I could donate a few hundred and some of my time to make that ramp a little better.

I like everyone's attitude here! I to would be willing to show up and help and donate some $. Maybe we can get together with the engineer and rebuild this. Maybe we can put in a new ramp with a plaque and sale names. Could have your name on the Nestucca forever.Same idea as selling bricks with peoples names on them. There are many ways to raise money and I am sure alot of fisherman would donate time and dollars.

Yes Gary,

If enough interest, I'll see what it'll cost to fix, check it out with ODFW and fix the ramp. I can handle that!

I did have Paul Johnson engineer for ODFW in the boat last spring. He is aware of the problem, but there just isn't any funds.

He might even have drawn up a plan, I know he was trying to figure a way to keep the high water from washing it out on that corner.

There might even be a possibility of obtaining some funds from the State Marine Board or the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation? NW Steelheaders? How many out there willing to help?
