Default IHPC considers halibut limits for 2007

Preliminary ... the decision is made in January. But interesting nonetheless.

Thanks Tom of Minaki.

Quote:
Movement of fully-recruited fish from outside of the core areas used in the original harvest rate analysis results in an underestimate of the historic minimum spawning biomass used as a basis for these reference points. Therefore, the reference point biomass levels are greater and the harvest rate must be lowered to achieve the same level of protection from reaching these levels.
read the notice here

http://www.iphc.washington.edu/halco...nr20061205.htm

2006 was 1.38 million total for all fishing and 2007 is recommended at 1.02 million or 73% for area 2A for all fishing.

Yes, it's interesting. It means our halibut allotment and catch will be lower next year but hopefully it also means the halibut stocks will stay in good shape for years to come.

If I see correctly this only covers Alaska, Canada, & Washington
Maybe the northern Oregon Columbia area as well
Does this affect say Depoe Bay, Newport, and southern ports?

Inquiring minds are wanting to know

There was a re-evaluation of the data and a new recommendation. Whether or not this will be adopted is not certain. All the data and options will be looked at and voted on when the IPHC meet in January. It will be interesting to see what comes of this.
