Default Does Oregon Have a Proxy Hunt Program?

Here in Alaska I can hunt on behalf of a disabled person in some hunts. We call it proxy hunting. I was wondering if Oregon has any similar type of program? I looked through the regs and couldn't find anything. Here's the specific circumstance-My dad has an antlerless cow elk tag that starts January 1. He is disabled. I'll be there for a few days to try to help him connect. As long as we can find some animals close to the road he'll be fine, but he wont be able to do any stalking. He's mentioned handing me the rifle if for example the elk are out in a clear-cut and need to be pursued. I know there are all kinds of ethical considerations with that. Dad just wants some elk meat in the freezer. I would like to know if there is a way for me to harvest my dad's elk legally. Thanks.

Fullcurl...

Oddly enough there are lots of folks down here that are not disabled and still shoot elk from on or very near the road.

You shouldn't have too much trouble getting your dad onto a cow if he can manage a short walk to get off the road and shoot.

I am sure there are lots of folks here who can get you guys pointed in the right direction as far as likely places to hunt.

Good luck and good on your dad for not letting his troubles keep him out of the field.

Sorry, I don't know about Oregon, but in Washington a disabled hunter can have a "designated hunter" who is allowed to shoot his animal for him. Seems like Oregon would have something similar.

I don't think Oregon allows another person to shoot a disabled person's animal unless the Disabled person is blind, but I think the blind hunter has to be right there with his/her designated shooter.

i belive that once an animal is wounded that the disabled helper is alowed to go and find and finsh off the kill for the diasabled hunter as long as the disabled hunter has a disabled permit from the state check out the regs for sure they are out now gi joes and fishermans both have them

First question....does he have the Oregon disabled permit. If yes, second question...will he be hunting public or private. The permit allows him to shoot from a vehicle that is parked. I believe the rig also can not be running. This only applies to off road and private property. He will not be allowed to legally shoot from the rig if it is a public road or public land in any case.
Back to the first question.....the permit application is available on line at ODFW website. After his doctor fills it out you send it to the state (info is on the app.) and they say it takes two weeks to get an answer. He definately has time to get the permit before his hunt starts. You are only allowed legally to finish the animal off for him unless, as stated above, he is legally blind. If I remember correct, you do not have to have a tag or license to assist him in finishing the animal. The Regs are on line but make sure you read the 2007 regs also.Good luck to you and your father.

Much good info in above posts. After you read the regs, call ODFW and talk to them about appropiate alternatives in your fathers particular situation.
They will very likely give you the best advice.
