Default Rod holders

You know how it is. You see other boats at the ramp and some of the things they have get you to thinking.

Take Bait of Eggs and his boat Aces N 8's for instance. He's got rod holders for days. I was looking mostly for ideas on Radar scanner mounting but the rod holder forest caught my eye.

So I think I have the Radar arch figured out finally. And I found someone to build it. He has a CAD program and sent me a picture.

I saw this at the TA meeting last week. Bait has like 12 on his boat so rod holder envy set in. Nice work on the design for the radar arch but my comment was

'Not enough rod holders'.

So today I got this picture

Is that too many?

Cool, check your spacing on that bad boy so the reels don't bang into each other where you doubled up.

I think if you asked Roy he'd like to double up on his rocket launchers. I don't think you can have too many.

I think this would be a good start...

Too many? NO.

But consider how difficult it may be to get to them. I'd stagger, i.e. offset, the ones on the sides. also consider how the rack (arch) fits on the boat and if the rods will inhibit casting. Might help if they were a bit closer to vertical.

yeah, I know, you weren't looking for serious observations or comments!

Here's a tip for ya. On each side, have at least one holder either adjustable, or welded in such a position that it is pointing out, slightly above horizontal.

This way you can fish a swimbait out each side, way the heck back.

We hook a lot of fish on these "rooftop" holders. They are nice because when you stop on a hookup, you can usually leave them out since they are up & out of the way.

I got 11 rocket launchers across the top of the boat, and one of the winter projects is to modify that to at least 20 rocket launchers, maybe 22 or 24. I found myself this year with the rocket launchers full and putting additional rods in the rod holders on the trip in and out.

I know that sounds silly, but every trip out I have them full and have to tell guys to leave rods at home.

I want a set of 6 or 8 rods set up for trolling, would like at least 3 or 4 set up for jigging deep, and have 3 or 4 set up for casting swimbaits, and then there is always the chance we might stop and salmon fish and where do those rods go, I dont want to reel salmon in on a meat stick and a big reel.

There is always a gaff or two stuck in the rocket launcher, as its easier to get to than the side trays when the tote kinda blocks access to it.

By next year, I will be the Tommy Lee of rocket launchers.

I think building more rod holders on a boat is like adding lanes to a freeway.

There are 6 now on 'Kismet' and that is not enough. Also they are not welded on so they are suspect.

MarkMc ... the two rocket launchers on the bridge are out at an angle as you describe. Way back fish trap rods go there. And just as you describe they work well there.

12 will be enough I think.

We just need bigger boats, Roy! I plan to double the number of RLs I have on the roof and add some down the sides as well.

Pilar - I think the five-spacing on the first pic is a waste of space. The spacing on the 14-per-side is about right if he just eliminated the doubles. How about 7 per side faced normally and one at the top on each side facing out?

John, don't forget to have him put two in the middle of the radar arch for a "shotgun" rigger and a rod to go on it!

I have 8 on mine and a net holder and gaff holder on the legs of the radar tower. If you look real close at the front leg you can see the net/gaff holder there is one on each side.

Tomictime, 10 rod holders not enough! You will be trolling with 5-6 rods. You will also need at least one rod, but prefer 2 rods per person on board to fish live bait or cast swimbaits....That 10.5' beamy new boat will hold alot more....well, it's only boat bucks anyway!!! Got port account???

You can never have too many rod holders. I found that out too late. I wish someone would have told me that before I ordered my new boat. Smily came over to see my new boat when it arrived and the first thing he said was you didn't get enough rod holders. Boy was he right.

Buy an envelope, mark it "College Fund". Put two Lotto scratch tickets in it and a note that says, "Good luck!"

Wet fly .. who will soon be competing with Ed Wing for welders.

Bill .. those outrigger racks on the sides of the 'Kismet' cabin were done by Wet fly. I was going to add the radar arch on top of them but got a temporary radar mast rig working and stopped there. Now we're going to finish it. He does first class work and is a nice guy besides. I had them powder coated.

Dean,
Now let's be honest... The KeyWest is capable of what, 63 knots with just you in it, probably 53-55 fully loaded for fishing? Who is going to believe that you would be satisfied with 50K? I'm thinking 58-60 knots minimum with a load of ice and bait. No-one is ever going to beleive that you are going to slow down.
I'm gonna be hanging on tight! Damn, this is gonna be fun!

Wet Fly, you're gonna be a busy man. I have visions of a "roll bar" with a diamond plate shelf about mid height to hold two 22 gallon tanks, rocket launchers on top of course. Two base plates on the deck, two on the transom. Four pull pins and all is gone!!

With fuel quick connects and two valves, one in the main line and one in the auxiliary line, I can run out on the aux tanks, then cross over to the 104 gallon main by simply switching two valves, no open tanks.

If I have to get into a towing situation for another Dog, I believe I'll have about 35 gallons to play with.
Should work and look cool as well!!!!

I agree, rocketlaunchers are awesome. I really appreciate being able to get the rods out of the cabin where they are susceptable to damage. However no matter how many holders one has, at least on a boat my size, I still have to put the rods back in the cabin to cast swimbaits.
So I guess I'll just have to upgrade the size of my boat so I can accomadate more poles.........I've been thinking about something like this

I am reasonably sure I couldn't build enough rods to fill this bad boy.
