Re: New ODFW head appointed
Here is a PR excerpt from ODFW for anyone interested:
Ball, 48, has served as the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division Director for OSP since 1993. In addition, he has spent the last seven years as a member of the ODFW's executive leadership team, where he participates in the agency's natural resource management decisions.
The Commission cited Ball's good communication with legislators, his knowledge of Oregon's fish and wildlife issues and his long experience working with ODFW employees as key reasons for making the decision.
"We are in a situation where we need someone who can lead the agency through the legislative process while we begin the search for a permanent director," said Paul McCracken, Commission chair. "Lindsay's experience made him the logical choice to take on the task."
Ball has a Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Science from Oregon State University and is a 25-plus year veteran of OSP. He worked seasonal positions for OSP in Tillamook, Astoria, Newport, Gilchrist and Summer Lake. His career as a permanent employee of OSP began in Portland in the Patrol Division. Since that time, he has worked in the Fish and Wildlife Division as a field officer, sergeant and lieutenant in John Day, St. Helens, The Dalles and Baker City.
Ball emphasized his understanding of Oregonians and the value they place on healthy fish and wildlife resources. "I have worked all over the state with Oregonians who are concerned about Oregon's fish and wildlife," said Ball. "Oregonians are very passionate about the management of their fish and wildlife resources. I have a good understanding of where they are coming from, and how they want to see the future of their fish and wildlife realized."
Ball also said conservation of Oregon's fish and wildlife resources is his top priority. "I'm a traditionalist when it comes to conservation," said Ball. "I look at conservation as a means to utilize without exploiting fish and wildlife resources. That philosophy has served Oregon well over the years and will continue to do so."
Ball will begin working for ODFW Feb. 16 and is expected to continue as the interim director until the position is filled permanently. The Commission will soon begin a nationwide search for candidates.
