Default Evil gill netters!

Last weekend, after a few weeks of inexpliclably poor Sturgeon fishing, I ran from Kelly Point, all the way down to Trojan and back. I stopped at every hole on the way and check it out. Although there was a bit, virtually all the fish were shakers, except a few keepers at the upstream end of Trojan hole.

Now when, the keepers should be in thick, and were a month ago, fisherman everywhere have been complaining about how the gill netters have decimated the fisheries.

Even worse, some of the gillnetters have been cutting the top tails off the near keeper sized fish (keeper length for commercial fishing is 48"). I personally caught one last week that would have been over 42, but without the top of its freshly cut off and bleeding tail, it had to go back. If its not bad enough that they are even out there, they have been cutting down on our takes by making the fish artificially shorter. This of course, means war.

If you see gillnetters working the holes, watch them carfully. If you see any tail cutting, or catch a tail cut fish, call the State Police..they are already aware and watching too. Maybe if we can get a couple of boats fined into drydock, we might see some more slabs-o-meat in our smokers, and still have fish in the river when our kids grow up!

Has there been any word on another attempt to get a gillnet ban on the ballot? It should have a better chance at passing this time becuase of media coverage about the disappearing native fish runs.

Castaway,
Ya that sounds good, but we're talking Oregon politics here..ie good freeking luck! A couple of ****** of retired navy seals would be much more effective, if U know what I mean.
