For Immediate Release January 26, 2001

Fish and Wildlife Commission Meets in Special Session Tuesday

PORTLAND - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will meet in a special
session 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 to discuss hiring an interim director for
the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). The public meeting will
be held in the 4th floor Director's Conference Room, Oregon Department of
Fish and Wildlife Headquarters, 2501 SW First Avenue, Portland. The
Commission is the rulemaking body for ODFW. The six member body hires the
agency director. Current director Jim Greer announced earlier this month
that his last day as director is Feb. 15. For more information, please
contact Dodie Staudinger at (503) 872-5272.

Make sure if you go, you voice your opinion on whether the commission should continue to appoint the director, or if the governor should get to do it. This is in the legislature right now. The gov. and key legislators want to change it to governor appointed, which I think is terrible because
a) it means whoever is governor gets to appoint the person, whether they are qualified or have fish/wildlife interests at heart or not and
b) it could mean a change in director's every four years as a matter of course.

With Kitzhaber, this might be fine, but think about some past governor you may not have liked, and consider what would happen if they appointed your FW director.

If you want to voice your concerns over who hires our next ODFW Director, you need to make that concern known to your State Representative. This meeting is with the commissioners from ODFW who have nothing to do with the decision making process of our State Legislature. Please contact your state representative in your area to voice your concerns on this issue!

Well at least there was some notice. 12 hours doesn't seem like enough for us 9 to 5 Joes. It's hard to bail on the prearranged, daily grind to attend something on short notice. Is there any info on who is up for the job?

The bend is your friend!
