Default Roseburg Ideas....

I leave Tuesday afternoon for a business trip down to Roseburg. I'll have a few hours at sunrise on Wed AM to spend on a river trying my ameture steelhead tactics.
Any suggestions on rivers or locations to try would be greatly appreciated. (Anywhere between Drain and Canyonville)
Thanks in advance

FishFreak,
Drive down to Myrtle Creek and fish just up river from the bridge. Drift fish just below the little rapids to the bridge. You can park right at the bridge in the gravel and walk down the trail. You can't miss it. You wouldn't believe how many fish are caught in this spot.
Good luck,
Ken

For additional information on improvements to Winchester Dam or fish viewing, contact Fabian Carr at (541) 440-3353. He's the facility manager for ODFW.

Kroy is right. Talked to a buddy of mine today and he's been slaying them there. Rocket red corkie, yarn and eggs. I had an invite to the s fork of the Coquille tomorrow but they are leaving @ 3:00 am  Tooo early . When I lived there I caught lots of fish out of this hole. There are a few others but harder to find. Gazley bridge in canyonville and the state park in canyonville also has some nice water. Ace hardware in Cville can direct you where to go. Go Luck

PS The south has a much better winter run than the north. Plenty of fish

There are two parks, right where the North and South Umpqua join, out of Melrose or Winchester, that have some good steelie fishing. That's where I caught my first steelhead, on a Bolo spinner!

Check out the Big K Ranch (ifish sponser!) on the Umpqua! Since your somewhat of an amateur, consider hiring a guide there - some of the best guides on the Umpqua system work with the Big K Guest Ranch.

I'd call around. I grew up there. There's good access at River Forks Park where the North & South Umpqua meet.
There's limited access from Amacher park just down stream from the dam on the North. It's on the South side of the river just beneath Interstate 5.

Call Larry's City Sporting Goods in Sutherlin at 541-459-9295 or www.larryssportinggoods.com

I live in Eagle Point now and find them very honest and helpful when I need local info.

There is a salmon and steelhead viewing facility at Winchester Dam, just on the edge of Roseburg. The facility is managed by the hatchery manager, and you can learn more about it by going to the ODFW main website, and look at the fish section and facilities. The staff will be a great resource for you. Since the Umpqua system is legendary for steelhead, your visit to Roseburg should be both educational and enjoyable. There may even be some steelhead around there at this time.
