Ratio of Natives to Hatchery
For all of you who have successfully tagged steelhead this season, what is your ration of nates to hatch?
Seems I have seen an unusual amount of natives this year, and have heard the same from most people.
Would like to take a poll here to check out your results.
Jen

Re: Ratio of Natives to Hatchery
2 hatchery in two trips no Nates for me. Thanks ifish for the pink worm tips. One trip for two boats on the Wilson was 4 on and 2 in the boat for me. The other boat was a 19lb Nate on Sandshrimp. I'll let Sand Shrimp tell that story if he wants. I have the anolog pics to prove that he is a real fisherman.
Saturday was very slow I only heard of one Nate for the whole day but we do know what liars fishermen can be. Hope that helps your scientific sampling project Jennie.
GO PINK WORMS!!!!!!!

Re: Ratio of Natives to Hatchery
Interesting that you mention this Jen. My ratio for the season is about 5 to 1 in favor of natives. I have noticed that the majority of the fish I've landed have been fairly good size.

Re: Ratio of Natives to Hatchery
Hey Bugleman2u how did the pics of that native I caught turn out? What an amazing fight it was.I hooked the fish while in my boat and it wraped me around a large stick under the water and just about took all my line.I had to get out of the boat and wade upstream about 20 yards in waist deep water and try to get my line off of the stick.Dennis was trying to help me get my line off of the stick with the net handle but unfortunately the stick came off the bottom in fast water with my line still attached and was taking out line like a fish.So at this point me and Dennis got back in the boat trying to chase down the stick into the next hole.Bugleman2u and another friend were in their boat laughing at me for playing a stick for so long.I didn't know for sure if the fish was still there or not.I finally caught up with the stick and tried to pull it up to the top of the water.I finally reached down in the water and grabbed the stick and freed my line.I tightened up the line and felt resistance and sure enough the stick had floated downstream about 100 yards right to where the fish had stopped.I finally landed a chrome bright native of about 18-19 lbs.Let's get together and do it again Bugleman2u.

Hey Sandshrimp,
Remind me to bring my video camera the next time we go fishing together. Getting that on tape would have great!

Re: Ratio of Natives to Hatchery
That was truly a battle. You should have seen the determained fisherman wading up stream at least 50 yards through current, sticks and waist deep water. We had a ball laughing at you playing your stick. Good job!
Sand Shrimp you will have to wait for the pics. The roll is just past 1/2 done. So if you want your pictures developed you will have to pray that I start catching even more fish to use the roll up. It is agonizing waiting that long but worth it when the roll is full of all those fun memories. I'll give you a copy.

Re: Ratio of Natives to Hatchery
These totals are from the SC, 5 trips, 9 fish: 5 hatchery, 4 nates, all in January January. This is usually our peak month for hatchery fish. Feb. still produces good numbers of brats, but theratio usually slides the other way. Unless you fish a stream w/o a hatchery program.
What we need is a Feb. 1 bait ban date... no bait past Feb. 1. That may help!!!
