Bad Sportsman of the Year
Seems like there were some doubters in a previous post about the guy who took a kid's bird at SI, but he struck again this week stealing three birds shot by the next blind. His reasoning? The law says if it is in your possesion, its yours. He is lucky he came in contact with a guy who thinks that a bird (or three) isn't worth a fight with a guy with a gun...who looked sort of crazy anyway as was described by my friend.
Kids, you can't make this stuff up.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
Q. What sort of a turkey would do that, much less even want to steal someone else's bird to begin with.
A. A complete and total turkey.
I don't get it, I'd feel like a total schlunk if I took someone elses bird.
Sounds like this person needs to get a load of river mud in his waders.

Find out where he is hunting next, and I will choose the blind right next to him. I'd like to see him try and steal a greenhead from me. I promise you that wouldn't be pretty.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
SI must have a record of the parties name or something from getting a blind out there. Report it to the Gamies maybe they can do something about it if it's a problem. But you are absolutly right it would take a real turd. to do what he did.

Folks, I will remind you that discussing or advocating activities which are against the law is against the AUP.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
Not worth the effort. It's a bird or two or three, life goes on. There are always more birds to hunt anywho. I never get suprised by anything at SI.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
Shoot, if this guy wants birds that bad he can come with me. Let his dog retreive 7, then get the heck out of my blind! 7 more "go's" for me!
Seriously though, I know there are some lame ass guys that hunt out there, but the vast majority are OK. With the exception of a few newbies and a couple jackasses that skybust and don't let the birds work, it's a decent place to shoot a few birds without spending 2 tanks of gas to get there.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
As a public hunting spot it's as good as one can expect. We will never be rid of that "poor" minority, but we can always hope we won't be hunting next to them.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
I guess the guy is too lame of a shot to actually shoot his own birds?
Time to get the area's phone number on my cell, I guess. Can anybody tell me what number I can use to reach somebody (an LEO) on Sauvie's when I'm hunting it?
Oh, and can we have the full story--units, blinds, etcetera?

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
Why not get a bird, Tie a string to it, Throw it out there and when he goes for it, pull the bird towards you a little bit at a time.
OR Take a bird that is rotten as hell, that stinks, throw it out there and let him take it home. Heck ! Have a little fun with guy. Who knows maybe you could get a laugh or two out of it..........!

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
I know its hard but it would be best for anyone not to confront this idiot but report him to the check station. They will most likely get in contact with Larry, the Columbia County Sheriff, that is almost always on the Island or at the check station. Let them handle it.

Rob, the phone number for the Sauvie Island office is on the ODFW site. Also, next time you are out there, get a cell number or something from someone at the check station.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
Try calling this guy: Larry B. Weaver, Columbia County Sheriff (Senior Deputy Fish & Wildlife Division)
Dispatch Center (503) 397-1521
1(800) 696-7795
Fish&Wildlife (503) 621-3488
and this # may be his cell, not sure but he wrote it on his card for me (503)341-1595
Larry is a great guy and is pretty much on top of anything going on out at Sauvies Island .

I agree with 101. It might be a guy who read the other post and decided it was an easy way to get dinner.

Regardless if it was the same guy or not, this guy was reported at the check station and was talked to when he checked out. No summons was issued because it was not witnessed by the law, but he got a good understanding of what not to do next time out.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
As difficult as it may seem it's probably best to put this type of incident behind us and move on. The perceived satisfaction that this person attempts to get by stealing will be overridden by the guilt he will later carry. This is a very unhappy person who has some deep-rooted personal issues to deal with that a stolen duck won't solve.

Are you kidding? I'd be willing he's laughing all the way to the dinner table. His attitude states that clearly, if not his actions alone. It's not like he's being sneaky about it because he feels bad or embarrased.

Sounds like things were handled appropriately. Keep an eye out for this person the next time and if he does it again, report him again. Just because he wasn't "cuffed and stuffed" doesn't mean that justice wasn't done. When he racks up enough reports, he'll likely be surveiled. At that point, as I understand it, any game gear in his possession can be confiscated, including his vehicle.

Re: Bad Sportsman of the Year
Common guys, you gotta be more sneaky than just confronting the guy. He is desperate for ducks, so give him some. Some of you better shots get the blind next to him and intentionally help him out, drop some his way and let him steal them. Then have somebody drop a couple of extra's right behind his blind and then call in the troops. He wants ducks, well here you go buddy!

It looks to me like this whole fiasco is also second hand information. So, we really don't know what happened even from one side, just what someone heard who was not there,
In any event, how is bad mouthing the event on ifish going to resolve anything? This is exactly the kind of thread we need less of.
Merry Christmas.
