Default Hey aye fish!

Just wanted to thank you again for my first sturgeon. I expected it to be fun, but that was better than I would have ever guessed. We went out yesterday and had an awesome day. 2 minutes after letting our lines out we caught a 39 incher on a salmon rod! Let that little bugger go and after another 10 minutes hooked into an oversized. Again with the salmon rod! Had to chase that one for about 20 minutes. Probably about 6 1/2 feet. After another hour I finally caught my first keeper. Beautiful, tagged 48 incher. Weird thing is, it had little black spots all over it. Anyone else heard of that? Just looked like excess melanin, not an infection or parasites. Anyways we got another 45 incher in the afternoon and picked up a few crabs too. All in all a great superbowl sunday. Todd, Tim, Donna and Eric thanks again for a great day and a wonderful dinner. First home-cooked meal I've had in a while. Let me know when you wanna fish my river.

The ones I was referring to are external plastic tags. They come in various colors and shapes. They should all have a number and hopefully a phone number or agency ID (ie WDFW or ODFW) on them. Write down the tag number, color of the tag, phone number, if possible also write down where on the fish the tag was at, and call it in. If you don't see a ph. number, call your local fish office and ask.

Well as far as the black spots I carry a Sharpie pen with me and everytime I catch a sturgeon I put a little dot on it... then release it unharmed. Sometimes I run out of room on them and I just have to tag them and take them home for a nice relaxing bath in some BRINE..

How this one got so far down river I will never know but thanks for lettin me know..

The tag is a piece of wire with colored insulation on it. They thread it through the dorsal fin at the mid point near the body and twist the bare wire ends together. Oregon tags are Orange. The wire is stainless steel.

Birdhunter, you neglected to say where. If you tell us on the forum, the scum sucking Gillnetters will **** your spot too. But you could E-mail me, I won't tell, honest! Good job on the gators, glad to see a few escaped the nets.

The bend is your friend!

Don't worry Pilar, I didn't neglect to say where. Somehow, I'm not too worried about the gillnetters. The tag was a yellow insulated wire on the back fin. Already mailed it in to the address that was written on it.

Please don't tell me the ones with the black spots are showing up on the coast. How far do crabs go up the Columbia?

Birdhunter,
Absolutely my pleasure to have you on my boat and what a thrill it was to have you get your first keeper with me. Been basking in the glow all day! I will not soon forget this day, as I had no aspirations of actually catching fish, not to mention getting two keepers and a jumping oversize! What a day! The weather was fine, fine, fine to boot. I fear you may be spoiled now 'cuz this was a first for me on the Yaquina (hint, hint, Pilar!), it is a very s-l-o-w place to sturgeon fish in my experience. We got lucky. You are very welcome for the day and the dinner, and I will relay your thanks to all. That was an exceptional meal we had (fresh crab and smoked sturgeon appetizer followed by chicken fried elk steak [my first archery kill] with biscuits and gravy). Man I love living in the northwest! I look forward to our next adventure together, it was a distinct pleasure. All of you folks reading this would do well to meet Ben.
Hopefully the following pics will post. The first should be BH with his first, the second is BH and my baby brother holding their prizes at the end of the day.

Blacktail- I am the holder of OR plates AYE FSH, since '91 when someone beat me out of I FISH, but I was not on 205 sunday. I am working in west linn and drove my pickup wed. and fri. last week. Silver 250 SC W/ black stripe. maybe you saw me then?

I am not sure how they tag Sturgeon, but the new 2001 Oregon regs say on page 11 item 17

It is unlawful to "Retain a fish which has had a radio tag inserted (a fish with an antenna trailing from its mouth or body)"

I doubt it was a radio tag, maybe just a band or a clamp or just how does a tagged sturgeon come?
