Default Salmonberry R. Acess?

Does anyone know the status on using the railroad grade to acess the Salmonberry river. I stopped by the railroad bridge at the mouth on Sunday just to look around and noticed a sign posted by Port of Tillamook that said no tresspassing w/o written permission. Also there were still Extreme Fire danger signs posted. (I don't think there's any danger now?)

I also heard in the past year or so, there has been a box you could put a slip in with your travel info that said who you were and when you would be back. Is this still how it should be done.

If anyone here is in the know, please post. I really enjoyed the trips I made before the 96'flood down there. I'd sure like to get back in there this Feb. And get back out without getting a ticket.

I fished from the bank above the Salmonberry
for years. I lived for it in the winter.
ODFW told me no more hatchery fish except
for recycles a few years ago, so have not
been back for two years. Anyone know if this has changed? Landowner at the mouth of
the Salmonberry, if they are still the same ones, became/are DH's so watch that deal too.

A few years back there was an article in STS about the Salmonberry. The last time I was there was after the 96 flood. I talked to railroad workers at the mouth of the river and they said it was okay to use the tracks for access to the river. That was four years ago and things might have changed since then. There used to be a wooden sign at the entrance where you could fill out an access permit

The salmonberry is a trib. to the Nehalem. It is managed for wild steelhead only. No stocked fish. It is a roadless river, only the railroad grade follows it.

I'm sending this to the top again, Anybody been fishing here this year or last, and know what's going on with acess?

Last time I fished here was two years ago. There was an information "kiosk" about 50yds up from the parking spot on the north side of the river. There were passes for anglers to fill out. You had to fill out one of these passes and keep them on your person while fishing the river. I did not go last year so I'm not sure if this has changed. Sure hope it hasn't.

I called the Port of Tillamook and inquired about acess to the RR grade. A lady there said that the reason the no Trespassing signs were put up was because of the extreme fire danger this summer. She said just to keep my eyes and ears open when on the tracks, and I shouldn't have any probs.

Hey Lippee,

I haven't been down the tracks from cocharne,
Do you acess it off of highway 26 and #10 road. From my forest service maps it looks like there is a road about 6 miles above the confluence with the Nehalem that drops down to the river. Have you been down that way. Is there any other road acess into the upper river? Let me know if there is!

Thanks,

Aaron

JH,

You can get there (cochran) by getting to the "town" of Timber and then going west on the road through the town. Follow it probably 5 miles of gravel to cochran where I believe there is still an old log pond (that's it). From there you can walk the tracks west, but I don't recall how far it is before you hit the river. You might take a bike.

I've also gotten to the river further down at a crossing called Belding on a road that goes off 26 and down the SB canyon. I haven't been there in probably 5 years, but if they are still open, the roads are very rough, steep and subject to washout, blown over trees, etc.

Good Luck!

I have been down that way, You can drive a little way's down along the track's. Then start hiking. There is a tunnel so keep an ear open for that elusive train. Where's my map when i need it. Service road 10# sound's right. When you head up there, stop when you get to the track's turn right along the track's. There is a small lake there called cochran lake, There some cuthroat trout in there also. Good Luck !!!
