Default Film at eleven!

Headlines
--------
MIGHTY FISHERWOMAN CROSSES THE RAGING KILCHIS RIVER, NARROWLY MISSING BEING SWEPT OVER FAST FLOWING FOOT DEEP RIFFLES INTO A FIVE FOOT DEEP STAGNANT POOL!
--------
I did it! I crossed the Kilchis today to get to the other side! That is the only reason, cuz there are no fish, but I crossed it!
I learned how by going deeper rather than the shallows by the riffles, less pull on the legs. Duh. It was scary, but I did it! I was clear up to my belly button!
It was quite disappointing after all that, to not catch the fish of my dreams, but I feel like I conquered something!
I guess it is disgusting that it is so low that even I, Jennie, can cross it, but hey, there is a high wind warning and finally..... MY STORM IS COMING!

Jen, while wading, do you use a wading staff? If not, you should consider using one. Get and old long ski pole. Get some bungie cord material and a quick snap to attach to the straps of your waders. It adds a lot of stability while wading and can help you avoid stepping into a drop off.

Good luck.

I used a strong stick, but if I like the ski pole idea attached.
So then could I say and really mean it
"My Rod and My Staff, they guide me?"
Hee hee!

You keep talkin' like that, and we'll think you're really a guy.... you know what men are accused of being guided by....

on the serious side. If you use a ski pole, knock the basket off the bottom. If you have a thrift store around, look there as they sell for around $2.00 pair.

Get one that come up to your shoulders, so if you find a deep hole you still have some pole out of the water for support.

No, no, no, Giz, that would be:
"Thy 'dumbstick' and thy staff, they guide me!"

Jennie, welcome to the Great Wading Brotherhood! (er, sisterhood?!?!) You did it!

Couple of pointers, not that I've ever had any accidents wading. He, He.

1) Always cross angling slightly downstream. this makes wading soooo easy, you almost float down and across. Fighting the current does no good.

2) Like mentioned above, a wading staff can reall help.

3) Felt Soles!!!!!!! need I say more?

4) Never face downstream or upstream. This doubles the surface area, Or in my case probably triples surface area, exposed directly to the current and makes it tougher to get across.

5) Your wader tops are not the limit to how far you can wade! they're just there to indicate how dry you'll stay while wading!

Have fun,

Aaron

Another thing to remember about wading while wearing neoprene waders (nobody uses the old rubber kind any more do they?).

Neoprene floats. Which means that if you fall, your feet and legs will come to the surface, making it somewhat difficult to keep your head and shoulders above water. You have to try to tread water with your hands while not letting go of your rod or whatever else you're carrying, because you're feet will be useless for kicking.

Not that I've ever done this....uh....I must have seen it on TV or
something....uh....nevermind.

But seriously, it is something to keep in mind, because I have slipped and gone down river several times while wearing neoprene waders, and it pays to know what to expect if it happens to you. Also, if you do happen to slip and go bobbing down stream, always bob down the river feet first.

AMEN! WMB? Good advice on the feet-downstream thing. (Not that I'd know anything about falling in and deflecting off rocks while singing suprano and trying to keep from breaking my new 9wt. fly rod, just because I NEEDED to be on the otherside of a rain swollen winter steelhead river ) :-)
