This just in from the NF hatchery:
From the manager:
Hi Jenny
I wanted to drop you a line and let you know how our first live spawn
went at Nehalem Hatchery. We were unable to anesthetize the fish because
of not having the equipment on hand, so we had to tire the fish out in a
net like device. All of the ripe female Winter steelhead were
strip-spawned last Wed. We spawned about 55 females in about 4 hours.
This was a slow process but should get better when we get the right
equipment to begin air-spawning females. All of the spawned fish were
held at the hatchery for about 24 hours after they were spawned so we
could determine if any delayed mortality would be evident from this
procedure. I am happy to report that no fish were lost and all were
released into the North Fk of the Nehalem at Alderville on Thursday
afternoon. Some of these fish will be caught in the fishery some will
return next season as 3 salt fish and some will not survive to spawn
again. Well all for now ...tight lines... Joe
