Default Ice Fishing!!!

I went ice fishing on Strawberry yesterday! A little cool to say the least (9 degrees, wind chill minus 10) We hauled our stuff out on the ice with snowmobiles. We drilled holes in the ice and started fishing. Had a couple of bites but didn't catch anything. We spent more time on the snow machines than fishing. Had a lot of fun fishing but wished we could have aleast caught a couple of dumb ones. (sure wished I could have been winter steelie fishing on the Clack instead of freezing my ---- off on Strawberry. I guess I have better luck fishing soft water than hard water!!) Anyone up there been ice fishing?? Any good stories???

Pilgram,

You must be talking about Strawberry Resivor in Northern Utah.

That being the case, you should travel over the border to Idaho and try Weston Resevoir.

Big perch and a few nice trout in there. Try bead head Hare's Ears or small white of yellow jigs. Make sure you are right on the bottom. It is important to be able to feel when you hit bottom when you jig. Also try tipping the hook with Wax Worms. In my younger days I caught more fish from that little resevoir than I can count.

Good luck and hang in there. I really miss ice fishing.

Mr. F.

I too have fished Weston Res. and it was most generous. However, I fished during the fall and the water was soft. As for fishing the Berry at 10 below, you gotta be nuts!!!! Perhaps you would have been better off fishing for Bears.. I here they frequent the Berry and are not to hard to catch. Drill the hole a little bigger, put fresh cut peas around it and hide. When the bear comes into the area he will smell the peas. When he bends over to eat them, sneak up from behind and kick him in the ice hole. It's that easy at the Berry. The Clack. has been slow for the weekend warriors. Schedule some time in May and I'll put into some Springers along with Rags. Now there is a fish worth being in the cold for. None better than Spring Chinook, better that bear fishing at the Berry.

Mr Fisherman, how long have you been in Oregon? And have you converted to Steelhead and Salmon? Weston Res was a fun spot to fish in the fall when the water level was down and the fish confined to a smaller area. Once yo got throug the mud banks the fishing was good. I traveled from SLC to fish there with a good friend that lives in Logan. WE had lots of fun there more than once but never fished for the perch. Lets talk bout what we've found out here..

Boy, this ice fishing sounds fun and the bear hunting too! I should drive over and go but the fishing on the Clackamas is red hot. We are getting several Eagle Creek hatchery fish and the natives are right behind. That Snapshot should give me a call. I need to show him how to hook a fish. I will even give him a handoff!

Ice fishing or bear hunting in January, both just don't make scents. However I would like to try the perch fishing, wanta go along? I don' take handoffs. If it's a big one I might consider it though. I am ready for a Do Over. How about Wed pm on the Clack. My boat or yours, no matter to me.
