Default Roosters and Green Heads (more pics added)

Our hopes were high, and the weather looked good in anticipation of a three day excursion to E. Oregon. We spent Friday looking for elk, but to no avail. We figured we could spend the remainder of the weekend chasing elk, and come up empty until the snow piles up, or hunt pheasants and ducks in the lowlands near the Snake River. We chose the latter.

Although we didn't shoot limits of ducks, we had a great time. Sunday, just after setting up on the Snake, we brought in a flock of 20 mallards into the decoys. Witnessing that by itself made the entire weekend worth it for me.

To add to our fun, we picked up a six month old GSP from an extended family member while over there. That cute little bugger will prove to be an excellent hunting partner to my black Lab, Sadie.

Cool! We used to hunt over that way as a kid, but I've been to lazy as an adult to drive that far!

Tell me about it, the snow and a gaggle of people coming home from grandma's house made our 5-6 hour trip more like 8 last night...whew!

We used to elk hunt out of Halfway. Beautiful country and used to do very well over there. When we got bored we'd go jump chukars down south of town. But it was like an 8 hour drive and my tush was killin' me by the time we got there!

I love it! Nothing like a few bonus birds!
Very diverse hunting over there....ya can pick a limit of curly tails, huns, chukar, and rings all in the same day. How was the river???...pretty blown out?.....or just flowing good?
I don't think I could resist tossing a bass rod around a little too.

Yes, another dog, but not mine. Grant, Shawn's father-in-law, has been arranging the pick up for a while. Shawn is part-owner, or at least he was until she took a dump in the house. Then, Shawn's wife immediately took the dog over to Grant's. I shouldn't laugh, but that's life with a puppy.

It will be great for upland hunting to have a pointer!

Hunt, we came close to getting some honkers too.

The river was flowing perfectly, not too high, not too low. Just in time for a wave of fresh northern birds for this weekend!!!

Great hunting out that way.

I want to try and get over there late this week and weekend. Will be the first time I have managed a trip into the Eastern portion of the state since my

Welcome!! We took those greenheads and some of the pheasants not more than 300 yards from one another, right on the Snake. We'd switch back and forth between ducks and upland birds if the ducks were not in the air (stashing our upland gear in the bushes while we were duck hunting, and vice-versa).

My trigger finger will be itchy until the weekend again. The area should be full of fresh (hopefully hungry) northern birds.

More pics:

Here's a shot of the field behind where we set up for ducks, there is a bunch of honkers out there waiting for us...

As previously mentioned, we saw no elk, but we saw probably 50 head of deer (no pics, sorry, including a nice 4 point), and these antelope who just played around in this field while we watched from the road:
