Default Alternatives to Gillnets

I'm sure this topic ******* has come about in the past and has had answers on other posts, but I'm too lazy to do the search feature. Since this has been a hot topic the past couple of days, I figured we could ******* see what methods ******* there are out there. I say ban all gillnets period, and screw alternative methods. *******

I have read the numerous posts on gillnets the last few weeks and have a few questions.

1. If many of the Native Salmon runs are in serious decline as they seem to be - doesn't the Endangered Species Act supercede the commercial and Native fishing rights?

2. Do the abundance (some seasons anyway) of hatchery fish mask the problem to the outside world?

3. Would a 4-6 year ban of all netting help restore Native fish populations?

4. Are there other ways that the commercial and Native harvesters (I don't consider them fisherman) can selective only take hatchery produced fish?

I realize that the current situation is not the fault of commercial/Native's - Dam's, pollution, etc all have taken their toll. But even though it's not their fault their practices would need to be severely modified or stopped to have any hope of the Native fish populations to recover.
