Default One Tuna Makes a Good Day

"If you get one tuna on a small boat, you've had a good day"

That line, spoken by a leading partyboat captain in Southern California, is one of the greatest lessons I've learned in fishing. Though Captain John has seen hundreds of thousands of tuna hit the deck on his 90 foot sportboat, he also likes to fish for tuna aboard his little 15 foot aluminum skiff on his days off.

His point is this -- let's not forget to slow down and fully experience our time offshore, and accept each fish with gratitude.

Sure, it was great to plug the boat with tuna this year, but John's words remind me to try to enjoy each fish, though there be only one.

This is Bills tag line. I agree that it is all about the search and not so much about the destination.

Have fun, enjoy the ride and be safe.

Peace, Tom

When I took my boat out for her first TUNA! trip (my second TUNA! trip ever and first time skippering for a TUNA! trip) we got 4 fish. I've never been so grateful for 4 fish in my life. The next day we got 11. I still maintain that because of the trip, the boat, the company and total experience, that was the best fishing weekend of my life to date. Sure it would have been nice to have plugged the boat - and I know the day is coming when it will happen. But those first 4 fish were symbolic of the labor, time, expense, friendship and overall experience of that whole weekend. Much love goes out to those who contributed to our ability to catch those fish and to our creator who put them out there for us to chase.
