CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
Well, we did the crab / jetty bottom fish trip today out of Hammond. We had to work for the crab, but did limit. Most folks seemed to have about the same luck.
Bottom fish at the jetty was a bust - not a single fish.
Water was pretty murkey and could see about 2" - so I'm thinking that is pretty tough for a fish to see a lure swim by... Also, the large swell has a tendency to push them out.
We talked about running for the shale pile (25 miles offshore), but since we were solo, and it was 8' seas - well, calmer heads pervailed.

Nice work on the crab. The fish will cooperate another day.

Yep - I was embarassed to put that online. If it were tuna or halibut - well, we would have been all over it. But for 6 yellowtail rockfish each we thought it best to save a trip offshore for another day.

So the Columbia is brown? Too much fresh water?
Thanks for the report.

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
Thanks for the update Dean. Crabbing has been ok for us as well. Lots of fresh water in the river as well. Getting limits but have to work for them.

Dean, glad you got out. Beat my deer hunt. 8 foot swell, = little ole rock fish. I would set it out too.

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
250+ kcfs at Beaver Army Terminal, that makes crabbing marginal.

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
Thanks Dean ... was thinking of doing some crabbing next weekend or two as extra treat for when the relatives come in from the east coast.

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
Thanks for the report Ken - I haven't heard from you lately - was hoping you were getting out.
Next weekend is looking pretty good so far (but it is still a ways away). We should get some decent crab in the Ocean for a month or so - even with the commercial pots out.
I also read that some of the boats may stayed tied up due to pricing concerns - so hey - could be a great window of opportunity to drop some pots south of the sunken jetty and then a run offshore:
SAT
E WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 7 FT.
SUNSE WIND 5 TO 10 KT. WIND WAVES 1 FOOT. W SWELL 6 FT.

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
I was there last weekend and the crabbing was very good, but look at the tides this weekend. Crossing the bar may be not be very fun this weekend with all the water moving.

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
Dean, Im planning on clamming sat, & crabbing sunday, Just was thinking the river should clear up some,so the crabbing will be better. If not how far from the south jetty do you put in your pots? Just curious because of the sea lions might get into the pots. John

Re: CR Crab / Bottom Fish report
I haven't had much of a problem with them in the ocean. I usually lay the pots about 1/2 mile south of the tip and keep laying south - in about 50'
Heard tonight the commercial guys haven't laid pots yet - could be quite good but unfortunatly I choose to have my yearly PM on the motor this week - it's still torn apart in the shop.
