Default iPod questions, frustrations

Christmas before last I bought my daughter a 20gb pod. it lasted about 9 months then the HD died. I found via a long troubleshooting process that involved trips to two apple stores that it was a Ipod made by Hewlet Packard, therefor Apple wouldn't honor the warrenty. hp did send us a new pod, which promptly died for the same reason. Last August I bought a Nano. Since it only holds 240 songs (instead of 5000) you have to build "lists" then put them on. We can't get it to work. The nano works fine, its just that between my daughter and I we are software idiots. I can get one song on the player, not "lists" we can't get the itunes software to do what it is supposed to do. I was told to delete everything and start over. Over the past 4 years, between my daughter and I we have about 7000 tunes on the computer and we don't want to delete everything. I have deleted the itunes software and reloaded it, no help. I'm about ready to sell the nano and buy something not related to apple. Any help or ideas?

Thanks

This example is for Itunes version 7

Create a "Playlist" in Itunes just for the NANO.

Connect the Nano and select it in Itunes.

On the Properties page, click the "Music" tab.

Select "sync music", "Selected Playlists" and click on (Only) the playlist you created for the NANO.

Now only the tunes in that playlist will sync with the NANO when plugged in.

My iPod has died several times, but each time I have been successful at resurrecting it. How? By beating the crap out of it. Seriously. The iPod discussion boards are loaded with comments from people that suggest the only way to jumpstart a dead hard drive is to drop it from waist height.

No doubt, iPod started the portable digital music revolution. But there are better choices.

Joe

PS- I'll give you $20 for your nano.

The reason the playlists are not working is because they contain the names of songs that are not yet on the player. The lists just contain the name of the songs and the order you want to hear them in, not the actual song itself. Here are the steps to get the songs onto the player:

Connect your Ipod to your computer via the USB cable and start Itunes.

Once in Itunes, go to <File> and select "Add Folder To Library" and select the location on your computer's harddrive that your songs are stored. You can repeat this steps if you have songs in more than one folder. If, for example, you have songs separated into folders by the band name, you can select the parent directory (such as C:\Music\ which contains all of the folders separated by band name) instead of repeating the steps over and over again for each band.

Itunes will then add the songs to the "Library" section on the left hand side of the screen.

It may ask you if you want to convert songs that are in ".wma" format. If it does choose "yes"

You will see a progress bar at the top of the screen indicating how much time is left before all of the songs are added to the "library" section

Once all of the songs are added, click on "Library"

Further down on the left hand side below "Library" you will see the name of your Ipod with an "eject" logo to the right of it.

Click and drag any songs that you want on the Ipod from your library to the ipod's name in the left toolbar.

Itunes will then copy the selected song or songs to the Ipod, again giving you a progress indicator at the top of the screen.

You can select several songs at a time by holding the "shift" key when clicking them. This will select the first song you click, and every between it and the last song you click.

If you do not want to select every song in between, you can hold down the "ctrl" (control) key and click on several songs that you want. This will select songs one at a time.

Once you are done copying the songs that you want on your Ipod, click the "eject" logo next to the Ipod's name. This will momentarily turn off the hard disk inside of the Ipod so that it can be safely disconnected without crashing.

If you run out of space you can just click on the "Ipod Name" on the left hand side and it will show a list of the songs that are on the player. you can click on any of these songs and press "delete." This will remove the songs from the player itself, but will not remove the original copy of the song that is already on your computer.

Hopefully this will help, let me know if you have any questions. This was just off the top of my head, feel free to pm me if you need any clarification.
