Default Oar length?

I have a 16x48 aluminum DB with 9'4" oars. I am considering buying a new pair but find myself contemplating about the length. What are some advantages/disadvantages for this criteria? It seems that 9' is the most common length.

Thanks in advance! - MB

Master Baiter, they say length doesn't matter. Especially for your endeavors . ...

For a lowsided &/or narrow beamed driftboat you can get by with shorter oars; 8.5' or 9'. For the later models with more common higher sides &/or wider beams the 9.5' oars work better. Some like 10'. The best thing to do is row your boat around near a launch to try the different lengths to see which feel best for your arm length and boat dimentions. Or go with the manufacturer/dealer recommendation per given boat model/size. - RT

RT, momma used to tell me that the more you played with it the bigger it would get!

My knuckles scrape the ground when I walk so maybe a short oar will work for my arm length! JK

Thanks for the Rule-of-Thumb.

As a rule for oar length, normally take the distance between the oar locks X-2 and add 6" this will get you pretty close...Os

Hey Os,

Just to clarify, is that distance between locks (x in inches) minus 2 inches plus 6 inches?
