Great Day In The Marsh
For the first time, maybe ever, the weather man was right on. I had been seeing that the forecast was for a storm to show up today, and that it was going to be hitting around 7:00am with rain and 25mph winds. I could not believe my eyes when I stepped out of the truck this morning, and the weather man was right on point! My anticipation of the hunt was at an all time high, and I was not dissapointed.
We packed out around 13 dozen decoys, and got set up just before shooting light. The ducks could not leave the spread alone. Every duck in the area, including lots of mallards, just had to come and say hi. Jon and I must make a pretty sexy couple of hens, 'cause those birds were lovin' it! It's hard to complain when the ducks are dumping in at shooting light, but it does make them hard to identify. Ever so carefully we began to shoot some greenheads, and we accidently took one hen. We knew it was going to be a good day, so before the hunt we had decided we would shoot birds one guy at a time. It was an absolute blast watching others shoot birds, and being able to take 7 at your own pace. As quickly as the hunt began, it was over. Around 11:00am we had all our birds. We shot 26 greenheads, one bull sprig (Herb absolutely cannot resist ), and one "oh sh**!"(hen). It was an outstanding day, and one I will remember for the rest of my life. Jon, Herb, and Jimmy: I again had a ball hunting with you boys, way to put the to 'em!

Re: Great Day In The Marsh
I can see that my fears of total world domination by Mallards can be put to rest.
You guys are going to need to let your Pipes cool down some day.
The birds will rue the day that you guys learned to hunt.

Re: Great Day In The Marsh
Cody, Jimmy, John- you guys are Greenheaded Kings in my book! I love, I absolutely LOVE seeing all your pics of mallard drakes...its unreal how well you guys do. If I didn't know any better I'd say you were hunting the Holy Grounds...flooded timber in Arkansas. Keep. Em. Coming!!!

Awesome day and pic. With the shades and everyone's stoic expressions looks kinda like an album cover for a 70's rock band. LOL. Very cool.

Re: Great Day In The Marsh
13 dozen dekes...all packed on the back!!!
Herb wears the shades most every hunt....they are prescription and he says he can see birds at greater distances with them....although we all knoow his ID skills need some work (what is that long white bird )
Brian...yes that is the tree blind Belle sat in so nicely. In fact, I was able to get Phoeniix to do the exact same thing .
Cody, Jimmy....all I can say is that hunt was just plain sick. It doesn't get any better and the shots we had were top notch.
Great hunt with excellent hunters!!

Re: Great Day In The Marsh
One of those great memorable mallard hunts! It brings back many memories of great mallard hunts I had in college. This time of the year I would schedule classes so I would have mornings free to hunt. I was on a real tight budget and game meat was the only meat I had to eat, it supplimented the ramen and potatos I lived on most the year.

Re: Great Day In The Marsh
That's funny EH. A lot of what I eat is duck, goose, deer, and elk. I too schedule my classes so that I have the mornings to hunt, and I also try to get no classes on Friday.

Bwahahahahahaha
I was thinking the same thing!!!!!!!!
No classes of Friday was a pipe dream. About all I could hope for was a schedule that didn't have classes before 10:00 AM.
