Default Dang Scrub Jay !!

While allowing the remote to cool down at half time of the games I glanced out back just in time to see a scrub jay jump a junco and procede to tear it to pieces !! We get a hawk come through and pick one off now and again but this was a first for me . Meat eaters after all, huh.?

They are pretty tuff, we used to have one down at the shop that would drop down off the fence and hit the alley cat on the rear......over and over. It sure made the cat mad !!!

I did not know they would take out another bird ? Did the jay take it out over territory, or was it looking for a meal ?

bummer,, juncos are fun to watch.. Jay's suck. I grew up around hundreds of acres of filberts.. jays were .50$ a piece. That is how I raised money for 6 years I have removed my share from the face of the earth.

The cat-jay thing is funny, but that actually can play into the cat's benefit - mine use to lie low for many many dive bombs.. then gotcha. Fun to watch.

While riding near the flying M I saw a jay going nutso in the tall grass. I stopped and walked back to see what was up and a Squirrel and the Scrub-jay were doing battle the squirrel was PO'd jumping pretty high to tangle with the jay.. NO idea what was up with that.

Those were my wives first words ..."that's just mean..get me the pellet gun " ...Rodaction , the jay took it up in a tree and ate it ! It's natural I guess . I get maybe thirty juncos and three jays out back. So if juncos ate jays .....

Jays, crows, and ravens. Corvids, all the same bunch of thugs in the bird world. I just put out a feeder in the front yard and three Stellars are hogging the thing.

We have a few scrub jays here but no problem with them attacking other birds. However last summer, we heard a "clunk" and looked out our front window. We saw a big hawk, flying off with a jay in it's claws. He landed in the neighbor's yard and commenced to tear it apart. We live in the city and it is very interesting to see these birds.

A couple of years ago, my granddaughter opened the front door and turned and said that I had a duck in my yard. The nearest water is a good mile away. I went out to look and it was a Canada Goose. It was not able to fly, as it was young. Well I caught it and put it in a box and I transported it to the Fern Hill Wetlands. While I was gone, my wife called me and said there was another one in our yard that was still covered in fuzz. I called the Audubon Society and they said to take it also to the wetlands.

Next afternoon, I heard a noise in my driveway and when I looked out, I saw a full grown Canada Goose waddling along, honking. I walked out and I thought it would fly off but it simply headed down the middle of the street towards the highway bypass. Neighbor said that he wished that it would have done that during goose season.

So this is what these birds are called ,my little calico cat keeps bringing them on the porch for lunch. I come home everyday and find feathers and guts on the deck. My calico has got to be the best bird hunter ever. Watched her attack a Mag Pie the other day and went for a ride up to about twenty feet before falling off the bird. You have never heard such screaching in your life. I don't think that bird will be back for a while. She weighs in a whole four lbs, not a big cat but very gutsy when it comes to chasing birds.
