Re: Best Burger
The Kobe beef hamburger at Ringside Glendoveer is absolutely amazing.
That's right, Kobe beef.
Yeah...it may cost $15 for a burger, but, damn, it is worth it.

Re: Best Burger
1.
This is a recent list compiled by City Guide. I hear lots of people really like the Helvetia Tavern's burgers. I myself am a fan of Calamity Janes. Great burgers, Personalized dollar bills stuck to the ceiling, water served in tin cups and good service.
Nob Hill Bar and Grill
937 NW 23rd Ave , Portland , OR , 97210
This decidedly untrendy spot is home of the glorious Gastronomical burger.
2.
Burgerville
1135 NE M L King Blvd , Portland , OR , 97232
Founded in 1961, this is a Northwest tradition for made-to-order hamburgers and old-time ambience.
3.
Calamity Jane's Hamburger Restaurant
42015 SE Highway 26 , Sandy , OR , 97055
4.
Stanich's
4915 NE Fremont St , Portland , OR , 97213-1728
People come from near and far to get their burger fix here.
5.
Monteaux's Public House
On Walker Rd , Beaverton , OR , 97006
This family-run pub is an oasis in a strip mall.
6.
Helvetia Tavern
10275 NW Helvetia Rd , Hillsboro , OR , 97124-8115
A lovely pastoral setting makes this burger joint a perfect country-ride destination.
7.
Higgins Restaurant and Bar
1239 SW Broadway , Portland , OR , 97205
Upscale downtown bistro delivers elegantly simple Northwestern fare.
8.
Slow Bar
533 SE Grand Ave , Portland , OR , 97214
Hipsters and rockers mingle over upscale bar food and a raucous jukebox at this popular Grand Avenue haunt.
9.
McMenamins Kennedy School
5736 NE 33rd Ave , Portland , OR , 97214
Grade school turned hotel, restaurant and bar helps revive a neighborhood--and lots of childhood memories.
10.
Giant Drive-In
15840 Boones Ferry Rd , Lake Oswego , OR , 97035-3402
This long-time burger spot is well-worth a trip to the 'burbs.

Though not in the Portland area, the burger in Wheeler at the restaurant that overlooks the bay is awesome (Sea Shack?).

Re: Best Burger
I used to go to Helvatia for lunch on occasion. Their burgers are mediocre at best. Just a regular thin frozen Costco burger in my opinion. The fries and rings are great though.
Widmer certainly serves up an excellent burger and I think they're 1/2 price on Mondays. I generally don't order burgers at fancy restaurants because I'm there for their best food so there may be better ones than Widmer's around.

I'll have to try Iccabods, but give George's Giant Burger on 99 by the theater in Tigard a Try, fresh ground, ground chuck every morning, try with mushrooms and Onions - you will need a fork. I wish I could get John Barleycorn's to make a burger like that - ok I'm hungry now <click> NO CARRIER

We go to Calamity Janes quite abit, but it's only 5 minutes from our house. My favorite is the North Carolina mushroom burger. I can only handle the cityslicker(small) size anymore. Great milkshakes!!!

The burger I miss most is a Mike's special delux from Mike's drive-in. Those gut bombs hit the spot.
For fast food Burgerville hits the spot sometimes, but I don't know how they could make a list of best burger joints.

Re: Best Burger
not really in the portland area, but no thread about burgers should be without this one. it is, IMHO, the BEST (and probably one of the largest) burgers around.
the place is The Logger resturant in Nappa, Or on Hwy 30 just a few miles before Astoria. don't blink...you'll miss it.
the burger is "The Riggin' Slinger" 2 half pound beef patties a couple of slices of cheese and topped with sliced jalapenos and grilled onions. Fries come with it..not that you'll eat them. lol.

Prime Rib @ the Pine Room is awesome, and so are the Burgers.
However(not trying to steal the thread, and moving on) Timbers in Toledo(last weekend) was the best Prime rib I've had since the Pine Room. Wife had the Burger, and said it rocked.
Note to self............If you get the real horseradish for the primerib in Toledo'''''''''''''''''
VERY REAL, and very good!!!! I had a cold when I went in, and came out with "pep" in my step, and no cold!
Happy Burgerville

Downie's in Bay City is awesome. And if ground beast isn't your fetish do NOT miss the oyster burger. AWESOME.
Giant Burger in Lake Grove is a great gut bomb. You'll be feeling that one for a couple of days...
I cannot figure out what people see in Helvatia Tav burgers... mediocre at best.

I'd have to say a Gateway Burger from the Gateway Shell station in Castle Rock. Another would be Ms. Beasly's in Toledo on your way to the Cowlitz. And I do have to agree with the Logger Burger in Knappa.

Re: Best Burger
Mmmmm BURGERS! Not PDX, but the place we have to go a couple of times a year is the Burger Shack in Hubbard, West side of 99E, it really is a shack and looks like it hasn't changed much since th '50s. They've got the double decker that could have been the model for the Big Mac the way it should have been! 'Nother place is Alf's in McMinnville. As I recall Witchita Pubs have good burgers, it's been a while since I've been to one.
I don't see how people can use the word Burgerville in the same sentence with the likes of Stanich's and Giant's, may as well include "Crap-in-the-Box" and "Septic Circle" also.
I'm thinking I need to print out this thread and try some of these places I've never been.
I love Hamburgers!

Re: Best Burger
In the Portland area, my vote would be with Stanich's.
Now living in Bend, for me there's nothing better than Dandy's Drive In. The 'doulbe grand dandy with cheese' is one of the best anywhere. Way better than anything Pilot Butte ever put out.

Re: Best Burger
The Burger Shack in Hubbard it closed. Actually, it's GONE! They bulldozed it a couple of weeks ago and the owner is building a new shack. Looks like it will be a pretty nice drive-in. I suspect that the floors finally gave out in the old one. Last time I was in there it was like walking across a dock the way things bounced and swayed!
Last article in the local paper indicated they hope to re-open this spring...

Fat City in Multnomah used to make a great burger! It's been years since I was there but it was a great place for a burger and a shake.
Out of Portland I'd have to vote for the Pasttime in Dufur. You can drool over the huge elk mounts while waiting for your food!

Last time I ate at Ruby Tuesday's they served me stinking, rancid coleslaw.
I told the manager, so she dumped it out and brought me a new cup of stinking, racid coleslaw from the same batch.
Never again, I say.

Re: Best Burger
I never liked knob hill burgers. Bomber burger is good its about the only burger that will fill up my 13 yr old son. Calamity Jane's is pretty good. Marquam Inn has a good burger and decent prime rib at a reasonable price. Might have to try some of the others mentioned here.

Re: Best Burger
Annie's in Aloha for a "little john", can't pass through the old neighborhood without stopping in there.
It was really shocking to see The Burger Hut in Hubbard gone a couple weeks ago. Went by this week and the new place is really starting to take shape. Hopefully they won't go fancy and wreck the old image or menu. They are a true family run place where it is not uncommon to have 3 generation working at the same time.

Re: Best Burger
Maybe not the best but been around for years.
The Red Coach, downtown Portland on Broadway.
Nothing fancy, but they taste good. Take cash because they don't take credit cards.

the best burger in oregon is at the cafe in downtown antelope (or at least it was in 1992 when i was there last).
skyline drive-in in portland
humdinger in cedar mill (+tots)
k&r drive-in, rice hill (+ a "single" ice creme cone that is two huge scoops)
ditto on stanich's, helvetia.
i'm putting all these recommendations in a spreadsheet for my travels around oregon

Re: Best Burger
I just had to check into this thread again to see if there were any new burger suggestions. I never order a steak when I go to a nice restaurant. I always order a meal with seafood or fish. I am not much of a meat eater. But I do love burgers. I am going to try a few of you ifishers recommendations.
I think timing is important when it comes to burgers. One of the best hamburgers I have ever eaten was the day my oldest son was born. The day was absolutely incredible. My wife was in labor from early in the morning until evening, over fifteen hours. She refused all offers from the nurses for pain medication. I have never seen an athletic achievement that matched my wife’s performance delivering my son. After witnessing this magic event, holding my son for the first time took my breath away.
Maybe an hour after delivery I gave my son his first bath. When I was done I looked over and my wife was asleep. The nurse said it was time to take my boy for awhile so my wife could rest. The nurse headed to that place where friends and family peak through the window and gawk at the newborns.
Even though my wife did all the work I was exhausted. I sat down for the first time in hours and started to nod off. About the time I was starting to relax our neighbor walked in to see how everyone was doing. I whispered that my wife was asleep and all was well. She asked what she could do; like maybe get me something to eat. At that moment HUNGER hit me like a scud missile. I realized I had not eaten since the night before.
My friend suggested a burger and I was too tired from the day’s excitement to care what I ate as long as I ate…..and soon. She said she would go to McDonalds and asked what I wanted. I was 42 and had never eaten at McDonalds. I didn’t have a clue what to order and I wasn’t all that excited about eating from a McDonalds. She mentioned a Quarter Pounder and I said what ever. She left to get my first MacMeal and I was asleep in seconds.
It seemed like I only slept for a few moments and there our friend was standing over me with a greasy looking bag and a huge coke (like the ones they give you at the movie for an extra 50 cents if you order the barrel of popcorn that cost 12 bucks.) The smell of grease hit me and once again I was wracked with HUNGER. I nearly tore the bag from her hands. I crammed a few of the fries in my mouth and pulled out this sorry looking Styrofoam container. In that box was the poorest excuse for food I had ever seen. I was so hungry I would have eaten the container and it crossed my mind maybe that container was my best bet.
I was wrong so wrong. That burger was delicious. I sat and ate it slowly savoring each morsel when it was gone I realized that was the BEST HAMBUGER I EVER ATE.
I had never eaten at McDonalds before that night and I know what you are saying….Yuck. How can A QUARTER POUNDER rate as the BEST HAMBURGER? Sometimes the best hamburger is all about timing.

Re: Best Burger
Crabman..............
EEEEEWWWW.
timing or not, and am very happy things went good, but your kidding about the Mc burger.............Right!
If not, take a breath, drive back to your local McD's, and savor another bite, less the starvation issue. They have good fries,(really good)
but the burgers rate sage brush, with a hint of 2 cows breathing on a manure pile. MH2$
Please expand, and seek out, more of Oregons treasures of burger delightfuls!
Happy Huntn'

Re: Best Burger
Crabman,
Nice post! Would have been the finest meal whether it was a quarter pounder or the finest of steaks!

Re: Best Burger
Bear with me for being an out-of-towner, but I ate at a place one time in Portland that had very good burgers. It was almost 20 years ago, but I think it was in Northeast Portland and was called "Cow Patties". Is it still open? Anyone else tasted the food there?

Re: Best Burger
The Carver Hanger would be my choice if I wanted a great burger. They make great fries too. You might have to wait for a table on a busy night but it's worth the wait.
