Default Sun glare in my scope

I noticed a little problem with sun glare in my scope this morning. My rifle was wet, and the sun was shining, so that might have added to it. Also, my barrel is stainless steel, and that might be adding some glare into the scope as well. But I’ve had this problem before, and it might have cost me a shot at a buck a couple years ago.

Anyway, I was noticing that if I position my head a little higher, the glare goes away, and position my head lower, and the glare is so bad I can hardly get a sight picture. When I bring my rifle up to my shoulder for a shot, I seem to be somewhere in between where I can get a sight picture, but I have a lot of glare.

Does anyone know how to correct this issue? It’s a Bushnell scope. I’m going to dismount it in the off season to straighten the cross hairs. Is there some adjustment I can make to the scope positioning while it’s off that might help?

Thanks! and good luck out there.

Possibly see if you cant buy a sun shield for it. I forget the actual name of them. However, they thred into the scopes and extend the tube out another 2-3 inched usally. And create a shadow so that the sun is not an issue

Which Bushnell scope is it? I think you may just need a new scope, one with better multicoated lenses, like a Leupold VXII or VXIII.

It's a Bushnell Banner. I think I picked it up for around $100 or so.

I was wondering if it being a cheap scope may be the issue. I have a Nikon Buckmaster on my other rifle, and never noticed a problem with glare.

Yep, I'm sure a cheap scope like that doesn't have fully multicoated lenses, which is what eliminates or at least reduces the glare that you're getting.

I have a Bushnell Banner on my 7mm and have never had any problems with glare. You may try getting higher or lower mounting rings.

You'll get some degree of sun glare from any rifle scope if you are angled toward the sun. Having a shiny barrel (stainless is bad, but bright blued with oil on it is also quite shiny) will compound the problem.

The sun glare is reduced by a sunshield because it narrows the angle that light enters the objective lens. It will help by giving you more room for error when shooting in the general direction of the sun. Putting a piece of removeable camo tape along the top of your barrel will help a bit also but not as much as the sunshield. If you want to see how much a sunshade will help, tape a cardboard toilet paper tube to the objective end of the scope and go out early in the morning or late in the evening and point the rifle (safely) in the general direction of the sun. Try it with and without the tube.

The flip side of having a sunshield on the scope is that it lowers the scope's light gathering ability. However, most of them can be taken off quite quickly if that's an issue.
