i think that the biggest legaly you can put on it is somewhere around 15 hp. Because most boats say what the capacity and motor size is legal or maybe just appropriate not sure.

didn't ask this exact question not a month before? If this wasn't you, you should check out that topic. Yes, on a boat that small, the horsepower rating should be taken very seriously. For example, if you had a horsepower of 15 on the 14 jon, taking it any further will result in a heavy stern - which will probably result in bow-tailing during the process of planing and may result in sinking...you know, the kinds where you take water from the stern and sink from that end! Hull design: most jon boats have very flat, thin hulls and if enough weight and power is acheived, the hull may give in, warp, and something bad's about to happen

I wouldn't try...is my answer

also, above the recommended horsepower and insurance won't take it as an excuse:blush:

Good Luck,

Looking through several jon boat websites, ie. Tracker, Weld-Craft, Lund etc., the maximum hp rating for 14' x 48" jon boats is 25 hp.

I had a 16' G-3 jon that had a 25 Yamaha and the thing hauled A@@. One thing that I did to the boat was build a huge casting deck. I used 1/2 marine grade plywood with a 2x4 frame. I then put carpet all over the wood. I also built in tackle storage and a fishbox/livewell into the casting deck. That was a sweet bass boat for me.
