Thought this was kinda interesting.
I'm definetly not any engine buff but a friend sent this to me and was pretty interesting.

Re: Thought this was kinda interesting.
I saw this one a while back and showed some people at work. They couldn't understand why I was so impressed. I used to be a machinist, so rotating assemblies that big make my eyes glaze over while I dream of 5.6 million pounds of torque.
A big part of my income comes from marine fuel oil, so I need some more of these colossal bunker fuel burners to be built. 1600 gallons an hour? Yeah, baby. Bring it on.

That is awesome! It's hard to imagine an engine that you climb into to work on it. I bet seeing one of those being built in person would be an awesome field trip for kids in autoshop.

Re: Thought this was kinda interesting.
I wonder what they use to get it started? Just think what it would take to get something like that to turn over.

Re: Thought this was kinda interesting.
I'm pretty sure they use compressed air, but I'd bet once it's installed in a ship it's rarely shut down.
Back in the old days they'd use explosive charges to start big diesels.

Re: Thought this was kinda interesting.
Yes interesting, not sparkplugs? injectors maybe for this two stroke diesel engine?
For trolling you will need to toss out a few buckets.
Yes compressed air motors for starting. They have air tanks always charged and run them through an air motor with a bendix that engages the flywheel just like your car. They shut down often, it is required in California due to air emmisions for instance, they go on shore power. That bunker fuel is pretty skanky.

Re: Thought this was kinda interesting.
They'll run a bunker/MDO blend sometimes if they're in port. They can't use shore power. Even if the big engine gets shut down, they'll just run on gen power. The tankers that dock where I work need so much juice just to run pumps that we'd have to run a cable as big around as an oak tree to give them enough amps. I don't think even California is that looney.
