Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
My puppy is having surgery tomorrow morning (Spayed) and was wondering if their is anything I should look for after her return home.....I have heard some pretty horrible stories about dogs that don't come out of the anaesthesia well, just wondering if their is something special I can do for her. Also having a ID chip installed at the same time. Another thing, when does a puppy become a Dog (she is 6months old as of the 15 of this month), is their a time frame or some other standard ?

I think what your doing is wonderful and shows how much you care about you pet. The chip is a tool you hope to never use but worth the investment.

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
Chuck, your pup will be fine! I have raised 6 labs, and had no problems, with that sort of thing! Just love your pup, she will be on doggy downers for awhile . I just had the pup to dog chat with my vet about an hour ago (he ate some steelie guts sat), I used to say I can't wait untill this dog is 4yrs old, then I will have a dog-Well Ezra is 6 now and I think he is still a pup Didn't help ya there much, but good luck, enjoy the time when they sleep!

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
Joe, I was just thinking the same thing, this will be the first time since she adopted me that I will be without her at home.....I really don't know what to do, if my wife sees this post I am sure she would have a list of things. I should do some yard work or work on my gutters......but I could also do some long awaited maintenance on my boat. Or just sleep....oh yea - the bed to myself.........that's it. The bed has won !!! Thanks for the help, it does make it better knowing others have gone through it with out any misshaps. Thanks again.

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
Make sure if you let her out, if it's raining, you don't let her get too wet and wipe down the area around the sutures if it's wet or dirty to avoid infections.
Man, I wish I could remember it, but there's a certain anaesthesia that you want to avoid. And you'll want to make sure that is not what your vet clinic is using. I'll ask my co worker tomorrow, she's a former vet tech and said there's a particular one that has some really bad side effects. It's not used much anymore, but some since it's cheap, some places still use it.
Other than that, you're doing the right thing. Our dog is neutered and ID chipped as well. Having it done at the same time is best bet too. Since she'll be under for the spay, she won't feel the microchip being inserted. I heard it's painful doing the microchip for the puppy if they aren't under.
Good luck and hoping for a speedy recovery!

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
VU, thanks for the info, I checked this morning with my vet. and they don't use the old stuff, too many side effects. Also while she's under the influence I am having her nails done, I don't know if its just my dog but she has this thing about her feet. It takes three men and a boy just to hold her down to clip her nails..........aah, the perks of drugs... Thanks again for the heads up.

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
As for the special things you can do for her ? Whats her favorite treat, food ? Get her that
When she gets home, (if not spending the night at the vet) she will be a little dizzy, so just make sure she knows you there and comfort her
She will also be wearing one of those funny cone hat things around her neck so she can not lick the incision, make sure that thing does not come off. Also she will look kind of silly :dork: so don't laugh at her, because of her hat.
She will be fine ! Good on you for caring so much about your girl !

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
Just picked Ruby up from the Vet. and all went well, she is a bit woozy but very alert. Not to keen on eating or drinking yet. Had no problem jumping into the Jeep (tried to stop her, to no avail) the sweet heart must have held her bladder the entire day, as soon as she found her smell at home....the gates open up both #1 and #2. Man this dog is smart and the training must have held.......what a sweet dog. I must admit I was very hesitant on getting another dog, they get into your heart and eventually they leave us. That is the part I was resisting, but she is in there now and the companionship and love that they give us is unconditional is worth all the chewing and chasing the cat. To see my grandson play with her, and the interaction between the two is magical. Thanks for all your great advice and good wishes, I would post a picture but I can't seem to get to my photo's.....

When she stops chewing through the electrical cords, garden hoses, barbecue hoses, socks, shoes, chair legs, door trim, vacuum cleaner hose, broom handle, ottoman, couch corner, kids toys, etc. In some cases, never.
Puppy slobber is like TUNA! blood - it's forever!
Good luck with the pooch!

Re: Dog Surgery Tomorrow (Questions)
Question on the worst gas imaginable, I thought I was bad after nachoes and beer. But this dog, is it the meds, or what.......enough to gag a maggot. Please tell me this will pass, I mean go away. Pass was a bad choice of words............other than that she is back to drinking and eating....and being a pest, and all around chewing mechine. Back to normal.
