Default Paulina Unit Success.....kinda

Went over to the Paulina unit with a buddy this weekend to try and help him find a buck. Well the deer hunting was lousy. In two days I saw one deer, but it was a huge forked horn. Just wasn't time for my buddy to get a shot off in the brush. This morning though the coyotes were out in force. We saw three and heard countless others. My buddy busted this one at about 200 yards. His first coyote. He was pretty stoked.

Hay, cool pic. I was considering putting in for the Paulina unit next year for something a little different. Were there a lot of other hunters around? Seems like they issue a lot of tags for that unit.

Good luck out there!

There was lots of road hunters but we got a couple miles into the brush every morning and afternoon and got deer on each hunt, the deer were there they just werent tied up next to the road, except for the couple that got shot by lucky guys on opening weekend.

Jeremy,
I think your experience was way different than most of the folks in the Paulina unit. We talked with a lot of folks and have hunted that unit for years and it was really slow for everybody that we spoke with. We got as far from the roads as was possible in that unit (there's a lot of roads) and the deer that we saw were spooky as could be. We had one guy in our party that had a nice buck shot while he was stalking. He was wearing hunter orange and the idiot shot over him to hit the buck. Tons of road hunters and quads hunting on closed roads again this year as well. We saw some real wall hangers, but they were 500 yards out in the trees using up ground in a hurry.
I'm glad that you had a great year, but your group was definitely the exception, not the norm.

We were in the travel management area so maybe that made a difference most of our party has been hunting over there for 20 years and this was the best year they have ever had. But is it true that we didnt see the numbers of total deer like we have in the past, when we hunted over there in 2004 there were tons of deer, this time not as many deer we just ran into more bucks.
