Having never hunted turkey's in the fall, I wasn't sure what to expect. But I arrived at my destination just before daylight and was met with a gorgeous sunrise and a crisp 36 degree morning.
I decided to make a loop out thru a patch of timber and scrub oak and see if I could find any sign. About 30 minutes into the hunt I started finding where birds had recently been feeding.
I would stop every couple hundred yards and yelp aggressively on the slate and eventually had a hen start yelping back at me. I found a good tree to setup under and began yelping and cutting loud and long trying to create some excitement. The hen yelped back at me out in front about 100 yards, but then I heard some birds yelping off to my left and getting louder. I cut and yelped at them and I heard a bird make a feeble attempt at a gobble. Less than 30 seconds went by and a gang of 10-12 five month old jakes came running up to about 15 yards. I waited until one of the youngsters seperated from the rest and touched off a load of 6's.
Should be a nice tender eating bird!
