Default My Summer Lake trophies

The season has officially begun. The usual suspects headed down south to Summer Lake to see if the birds wanted to play. It was a great trip with good company, and we managed to kill a few birds too. The majority were mallards and gadwall.

I'd have to say that for me personally, the highlight of my trip were these two birds that fell victim to the sounds of my speck call.

One in particular was a shot I'll remember forever. He was alone, and apparently lonely, for all I had to do was tempt him with a few of my finest, and his wings buckled up. He lost elevation very quickly, circled and came in on me at 30 yards. One shot and he was in the bag...very memorable.

Great annual trip, very tired today....can't wait to get'er dun this weekend. Bring on the West.

That was just SICK what that thing did. I was about 100 yards away watching the whole thing unfold. The bird started off at about 150 yards high when Jon first started talking to it. Now I don't know what he was saying , but it must have been really dirty as this bird just DROPPED out of the sky zoning in on a fowl mouthed Jon. As it got to about 30 yards high I watched Jon jump up and crush the bird. Pretty cool to watch. Then as if that's not enough, the sucker does the same thing to another Speck later in the day. Made me sick! I got my revenge later in the day though in the form of a band.

I heard some shooting over in north central Oregon, was wondering if waterfowl had opened up.

Congrats on your success lads! Do you have a Specklebelly mounted? I think it would make a nice bird on the wall!

Ron,

I have plenty of mounts but not a speck. I usually only mount birds that are killed once the season progresses a bit. Late December, January, and February are the best times to kill a bird to mount. They have usually lost all the pin feathers by then and have colored up real nice awaiting the breeding season. Too bad for us, because most of the specks have moved south by then. I killed a real good one in Dec. in the valley some time ago, but for some stupid reason I didn't save it to mount (what an idiot).

These two are beautiful birds but unfortunatly will never see the wall. They will though, forever live in my memory and in my scrapbook....and I'm eating them tonight .

nice specks, did it seem to anyone else that there were more specks around this year? my brother killed his first speck which was also his first goose. specks must really like the first time goose hunters. my first goose was a speck as well, but mine was killed in the valley

I think the real trophy is that whoever took the picture actually got John to smile. I thought the only time he smiled was when he got the Bling Bling.
Good job John,
