I need your opinion.
I have a wood stove, which is what we mainly heat with during the winter. I am getting tired of cutting three cords of wood. I was thinking of switching to a pellet stove. What do you think?

I would opt for gas, less effort with great heat.

Re: I need your opinion.
I have a pellet stove and love it. It's about $150.00 for a ton of pellets, and we typically use 1 to 1.5 tons a winter. Lots of places will also sell half-tons so that you don't have to store the extra all summer.
We have a 1700 sq ft. house and the pellet stove heats most of it. We use the wall heater in our bedroom to take the chill off, but that's it.
If you live in an area that is prone to power failure you may want to look into units with a battery backup, or just get a small generator. I have a generator so if the power does go out I can still run the stove and a couple other items like the the tv and satellite dish.

Re: I need your opinion.
We re-roofed last year and opted to put in a pellet stove instead of the wood stove. What a mistake. We bought a nice stove, it's not that. It's loud, doesn't put out near as much heat, you can't cook on it and doesn't have the ambiance! I do like the thermostat but if you are good with the dampers you don't really need one. I am actually thinking of putting a new hole in the roof!

Re: I need your opinion.
I have had every combination. My final and best solution is a heat pump. Three times more efficient than electric heat, clean and about 7.5 cents per hour while running, which relates to 1 lb of pellets/hour.

If you can get pellets for $150 a ton, then I want to know where. They're barely under $200 a ton this year. I need to pick up a ton pretty soon.
I love my pellet stove. It'll blast us right out of the house if we run it on the high setting for vey long.

Re: I need your opinion.
I agree that $150 a ton is either a screaming deal or low quality pellets. I just bought 3 tons and paid $165. Can't tell you about the stove yet since it is brand new and not yet been fired up. I kept my free standing soapstone stove but swapped out a wood insert for a pellet insert. Free or cheap wood is getting too tough to find anymore, not to mention the time to go get it, split it, stack it, haul it in, load the stove every 2-4 hours. Last year I burned just over 5 cords. This year will be a learning curve. I just hate paying electric bills and like the idea of pouring in pellets. I talked to numerous people that burn pellets. The general consenus is 5 bags per week. At $16 a week or $65 a month, that is less than 1/2 what electric will run. The $165 a ton deal ended on sept 30 but his price right now is only $175. Kingfisher feed in Molalla for those interested.

Re: I need your opinion.
We burn log mill ends. They get delivered and are 95% stove legth or less, then rent a splitter. Saves alot of labor. We have a gas furnace but the wood makes nicer heat and is a bit cheaper.
Biofueled ya know.
