Default Depoe Report 10/5/06

kennyg and myself are going out of Depoe Bay Thursday 10/5/06 in search of a tuna or two. Anyone else heading out of Depoe or Newport?

Guess not! We hailed "any Ifisher" several times and nada. Can't blame you, it was rough!

Went out with kennyg yesterday. Ended up at 45-10 x 125 in beautiful blue 57.1 degree water. We figured to find tuna we would have to go north to 45-43 x 125 according to the XM on the Garmin 3210, so decided to call it a skunk day and head back in.

Forecast was 2 x 6 at 11 seconds. That was true out to about 18nm but then became more like 5 x 8 at 8 seconds. Once in a while I counted 5 and 6 seconds between super steep swells. Far to steep for any more northerly travel.

My conclusion: There are still tuna, but, farther north and/or way, way west.

Another conclusion: Kenny printed off the latest SST from his terrafin subscription at midnight the night before we left and within 12 hours things changed drastically. By noon the Garmin 3210 XM SST data was right on. That eliminated the guess work as to our next move. HEAD IN!

Another conclusion: kennyg is a great guy and even though zero fish we had a good time. It's great to get to know fellow ifisher's. We have already made plans for our next trip.

Dang!
I was hoping for a post that said "we had to stop because the coolers and Holding tanks were plugged!"

Got a PM that reminded me of a "skunk", is that how you spell it? In 1964 I was trapping fox and coon and happened to catch a beautiful skunk thinking they were worth a pretty penny. After my Brother and I killed the sour thing we headed up to the barn. Two hundred yards from the barn my Dad, rest his soul, yelled at the top of his lungs, and said, "you boys head to the barn and strip butt naked, before you come in the house". The rest of the story possibly later.

John, we haven't been fishing for them. We are going to start this week as the weather permits. A few are being caught off the mouths of the Siletz and Salmon Rivers. I'll keep you posted.

Also, it appears that the SST's for the Garmin are getting to be very accurate. Only within 1/2 degree the other day as the day progressed. I was really impressed. We had a clear sky that a.m. so they must of got some good readings.

See ya,
Jerry
