Wildlife violators compact
Hopefully this compact will provide a greater deterence for those who violate our hunting laws.
wildlife violators compact
Hunters: Be aware that under the Interstate Wildlife Violators Compact, you can have your Oregon hunting licenses and tags revoked or suspended if you violate the wildlfe laws of other states. This means if your license or tag priveldges which come under the scope of the compact are suspended or revoked in one member state, they are subject to suspension or revocatoion in all member states (23 at this time).

Re: Wildlife violators compact
On the surface, I like this ideal.
Although I'm not sure what is mean't by "if you violate the wildlfe laws of other states".
Does any infraction constitute a violation or just heinous crimes against wildlife????

Re: Wildlife violators compact
That means Oregon has reciprical laws whereby you can have you hunting priviliges revoked if you are found guilty of
game violations in other states. Not sure what states but it's a great idea. Often times Gross violators like poacher will move to other states after being caught. This sort of ends their careers.
I think there was a case a couple of years ago where they were dealing with a gross violator from Washington over in Oregon doing the same kinds of stuff !

This is an excellent idea! The bad guys need to know that they have even more to lose.

Re: Wildlife violators compact
great idea..Oregon will hand out drivers licenses to illegal aliens and not check other state's records for criminal violations of people who cross the law..
but dammit...don't you dare shoot a deer out of season in some other state. that's just going too far!

I'm really trying to stay with you here SP, but I guess I just don't see how two wrong things make another wrong thing right. I just see three wrong things: entering the country illegally (Oregon can do very little about the federal governments decision not to prosecute or enforce federal immigration laws), committing "criminal violations" and poaching. All of it is going too far.

Re: Wildlife violators compact
i know i know...it's something i guess.
Oregon COULD make people provide proof of citizenship to issue drivers licenses though. most states i've lived in do. you either need a valid license from another state, or a birth cert. Oregon only requires proof of residence..which anyone with a mailing address has.

Re: Wildlife violators compact
Yes it is a deterrent but I'd personnaly like to know the details.
In WA, we have some sort of 3 strikes yer out program when it comes to wildlife violations. As I understand it (and I don't, 100%) it's 3 strikes in a 10 year period. If that bleeds over into the compact states it really does become a tough penalty.
Problem is, it can be three pretty minor mistakes. Yeah, I hear ya, no mistakes tolerated but all of us- every one- that takes to the field commits unintended errors. I have no problem at all with facing the consequences of something like that if I'm doing my best to stay within the law but it would sure be a tough pill to swallow if it was for 3 minor issues. It could be for literally forgetting an ink pen three times while salmon fishing.
I've never lived in a state with the complex rules regarding hunting and fishing as Washington. Not complaining, but I will state that I spend a large percentage of pre-hunt or pre-fishing trip time sorting through the regs and have bailed on a number of trips when I just wasn't 100% certain I was dialed in on the season or rules. Fishing is far more complicated than hunting but both are tough.
The ticket I received here was due to a stupid but honest mistake on my part. I took a "legal hunting hours" chart and mistook it for a sunrise table, subtracted an hour, and was busted fishing precisely 30 minutes early. The last thing I did before leaving was to check that blasted table. No excuse on my part.
I've changed where I fish to avoid that situation. Duck hunters- I don't know of any who don't occasionally commit some sort of violation- even if it's finding one round of lead buckshot in your pocket that you forgot about. Do it at the wrong time and it's a ticket.
Three tickets like that and you can't hunt in 23 states?
We're all responsible for our own actions, but I can't possibly think of anyone being able to fish or hunt 100% legally over a 10 year period no matter how hard they try. Odds of getting a ticket every single time you forget your watch, or your ink pen, or forget to pin your shellfish license on your shirt are slim but still there.
Not a rant, really, an observation.

Re: Wildlife violators compact
While the compact is a good thing, don't think for a minute that some of these suspended hunters aren't still hunting. They tag along to help others in their party and yep, once in the brush they are hunting.
The only way to stop that is for the judges to exclude them from the field, period. Some judges have done that, some exclude them from being in a vehicle with a firearm/bow. We have to make it easy for enforcement to keep these guys honest.
