Default I hooked my first Steelhead swinging - and lost it

I've only caught 1 steelhead, a 24" inch hatchery on the Deschutes last weekend while nympthing. So this morning I went to the North Santiam and was swinging a fly, not expecting to catch anything, just trying to learn how to spey cast (single handed). When the Steelhead hit, I was so supprised I didn't set the hook, which is a good thing since I didn't yank it out of its mouth  The first steelhead I caught put up a decent fight, but nothing like this one. It turned downstream and took off like a freight train, even though there wasn't much current. He didn't slow down, and I started getting nervous when he reached my backing and kept going, and so I tried to slow him down by palming the reel. Big mistake! Pop, and he was gone. Oh well, maybe I'll see him out on the NS again!

Congratulations Patrick! I love catching steelhead on the swing. Every bit of it, from the tap-tap-tap take that puts you on edge, to one that crushes your fly and heads for the ocean right when you were paying the least attention.

Awesome when a hot fish grabs and turns downriver. Better bring your running shoes next time.

Yep, to hear the real singing, culminated with the fish dancing on it's tail,.....well I'd have to say it's better than sex. Maybe that's why men can't stop thinking about it once they experience it. All one can think about is getting out there and hooking another. Responsibility goes out the window, as well as money. You gotta love it!!

Tall fly guy,

I love fishing, but better than sex? Who are you having sex with? LOL.

Or the better question might be, who are you fishing with

Maybe when I'm 60 fishing will be better than sex

Well, I'm married to a beautiful wife, and sex is great, but if I had the choice---tonight is this-- or tomorrow you hook into a steelhead. I could easily choose steelhead. Just don't tell the wife

Now hooking into a steelhead, well maybe if I had that 3-4 times a week it would be a different story. Now I'm sure the boys in Alaska holed up in some old lodge who have been catching fish after fish after fish, might have a different point of view.
