Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Well here are a couple, nothin huge but was fun to be with my son and my brother when they got them. My son got his first archery deer a little spike last Sat. He missed his first shot on a steep downhill ridge. When we went to get the arrow he ended shooting the spike when I was diggin his arrow out of the ground. This was a really steep canyon and the deer went downhill for quite a ways before my son finally put another in him to finish him off( the first hit was high and but wouldn't have been lethal). We were till 10 pm getting him packed out. I know this is an archery story but we had seen a doe and a forked horn earlier in another area and tried to get up on the buck but he was gone before we could get near him. My brother is a rifle hunter so I told him I knew where there might be a buck this morning so he said cool take me! This area is behind locked gates and has a pretty steep walk to get into a couple clear cut areas. My brother doesn't get around like he use to so I kinda lied about how far we had to go.. It was barely light enough to see when started in so he couldn't tell how far we had to go. I kept telling him " about a 100 yds or so" and after about the 4th or 5th time I said that he was ready to shoot me! Well I finally got him on level ground and to make a long story short, he took this nice forked horn almost in the exact same spot that my son and I had seen him last Sat.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Congrats on the bucks!!! Any blacktail deer is a trophy in my opinion! I too, often lie to my brother as to how far and steep an area is and he is only 26. Congrats.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
That is so funny. ..I also "lied" to my retired ex boss on how far we needed to walk to get to a particular unit I wanted to glass..
He is just a little out of shape and was huffing pretty good by the time we got there...
After about a hour I glassed up this little buck bedded on a little flat below us...
We watched for long time before he finaly turned sideways and we could see he was a legal buck...
His season is over and mine doesn't start until late archery...

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Rogue, I have no "guestimate" on weight. Let's just say it was huge. The land owner has been shooting this type of deer for nearly 60 years on this ranch and he said it was the largest body he has seen (I have seen larger horns, but not bodies on his ranch). It was close to 200 pounds dressed out. Tons of fat on the back and inside the body cavity. My buddies shot a spike on a neighboring place and it was also big bodied. Just a good food year I guess.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
I shot a spike this morning in the Paulina Unit at 9:14 am. It will green score about 11 .
It started out a 'she' as she stood there at about 40 yards for over five minutes staring at me. When 'she' started to walk up the hill, I caught a glimpse of something on her head. At first I thought it was spider web glimmering in the sun. But, upon closer look, little spikes. We caught eyes again at 60 yards and bang, night night.
Fully dressed at the meat cutter and without head, 58 pounds.
Tender meat for the freezer.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Not a wall hanger, but meat at least. Had intended to hold out for a big one this year, but with my girlfriend hiking along with me, and reminding me that 'any deer is better than no deer' I ended up with this guy. Passed a couple smaller bucks early a.m., this one was spooked to me after someone else shot nearby. THought it was actually bigger because I only noticed that it was about as wide as its ears, and saw the top fork on the one antler as it came through th trees and thought is was a 4pt. Oops, oh well, he'll eat good. Just over a mile pack out of the wilderness, carried it out whole made me glad it wasn't bigger afterall.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Took a friend out this morning. First light had two bucks, nice 4x4 and a 3x2, at 120 yards. He had the opportunity, but I think buck fever got the best of him. He missed the first shot and he said the next round failed to feed and all he got was a click the second time. It is his first year hunting and first encounter with an animal. He'll learn from it and do better next time. I'm just glad he had the opportunity.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Opening morning found me deep in the timber, still hunting, looking for a shooter buck. I started hunting uphill from my camp aganist a mild cross wind. I got about a quarter mile from my camp and decide to start hooking back towards camp for breakfast. I had just made it over a ridge allowing me to see down hill and through the timber. What I saw made me stop in my tracks. Here come three bucks running uphill right in my direction. So I knelt down beside a tree and waited for what seemed like forever, while waiting for the bucks to crest the ridge. The first buck looked like it was mature, so I decided to take it if it presented a good shot. The lead buck, my shooter, crested the ridge 50 yards in front of me and stopped braodside. I decided to take a neck shot due to the close range and dropped him in one shot. The other two bucks kept coming and stopped next to there fallen companion. One was a nice four point, and the other a smaller three point.

As I walked up to the buck its horns just continued to grow. It ended up having a 27" spread, 8 points on one side and 11 on the other. This is a Western Oregon General Season Blacktail.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Awesome work guys! StickFlicker that is a dandy...no,... ONE HELL OF A BUCK! Better get that one on the wall.
Snug, that's a fine buck as well!! Nice work.
Friday night's DA Meeting left me short on prep time so I decided to hit the river for a little low key hunt'nfish. All I saw were a couple toeheads (EO slang for does)....but ya never know when one of those island bucks will step out. Bass fishing was good though! And found another prime ducking spot as well.
Keep the pics coming!!

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Well some of you saw my post last year called "Jinx finally broken" I talked about breaking a twenty something year jinx of only shooting forks or sporks. As you can imagine I was worried I might fall back into that jinx. I proved to myself yesterday that I could do it two years in a row Here's my buck from yesterday and the buck from last year is below it.

That defintely ain't no coast range blackie! I'd say benchleg for sure. I'd love to see the tail? Great buck non the less. A true buck of a lifetime. Looks like the area around Suttle lake, newly burned. Great job and let us know more about this deer. If it is a coast range blackie, you've got a new state record maybe. Kris.

The two from BassBuster look more like pure blacktails than the one from stick flicker. Look at the darker faces on Bass busters compared to stick's. Also, the ears on stick flickers are huge, they scream mulie.

Not bad for a bass fisherman! Those certainly look like blacktail to me (from the facial coloring, nice high horn configuration, and the terrain).

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
no pics but my dad managed a forky opening morning, and then I shot the smallest 4 point I have ever seen on Sunday morning, but the way I see it is you can't eat the horns. 2 tags left to go in the Grizzly unit.

Re: Opening day lets see the bucks !
Can't imagine a blacktail like stickflicker's...wow.
Can have the memory, though, of my 12-year-old grandson's first deer...three-pointer taken with the .243 Model 700 he earned from me...He and his dad spotted it about 40 minutes into opening morning and he drilled it in the head...(yes, he knew the best shot was chest, but didn't have that shot and it was a clear shot for him at about 75 yards)...
So then the work started...he learned that there's more to the fun and games on the way to the dinner table...
Then he was full of good advice for his uncle, my son, who took a spike (forked velvet) at literally the last minute Monday before we broke camp...I was in my travel clothes, but had to stay in the pickup at KFC because of all the blood on my legs, toes and sandals...
I didn't mind at all not filling a tag this year...great camp, memories and family...
