Deer Report
It was with great eagerness that I embarked upon my journey at 4:30 this morning. I hunted in the Santiam unit south of Detroit Reservoir.
There are deer there. In fact, there are just as many deer in those mountains as there were when I embarked on my hunt. :depressed: I found out where they are feeding and what they were feeding on. I discovered where they were drinking. I found out by which route large bucks were travelling. I found fresh piles of deer droppings, still wet and shiny. I found deer hair on a branch. I came upon multiple areas where they had recently bedded down. In fact, judging from the dew on the grass around the area, but none on the matted down grass, I believe I moved them off of their bedding area. I found new fresh tracks when I headed back to my vehicle which were not there when I first passed through. But despite all of the evidence, pointing to the presence of deer, I did not even catch a glimpse of one.
But hey, at least I didn't have to clean my rifle when I got home!
Five hours of walking, and I am tired. I need a nap. Actually, it was quite a bit of bushwacking, because I didn't see any sign near a road. I had to get way deep into the brush.
Next time I'm going to park myself by the spring they were drinking from until I get one. If I can find it again.
