Rogue Report
I am just back from a 4-day float down the wild/scenic section of the Rogue River, my first time through that section.
I fished it fairly hard, casting from the bank when there was good water by camp, and running the fly out in front of the boat through good looking water when in the boat. I didn't get a hit. Not one! I saw one guide net a half-pounder for his client. Another guide said he was hoping the entire run was just a month late because it has been a miserable September. There were a few chinook rolling, but they did not bite the egg-sucking leech or egg pattern I ran through deep water with a sink tip line. Some of the others were casting spinners the whole way, also with no hits.
I have been known to shut down entire fisheries just by showing up, but it sounds like this one hasn't even started yet. I never saw a single fish in a tailout.
Other than the fishing, it was a great trip. Clear and warm weather, bright stars. A very dramatic canyon, with impressive whitewater. We ran the drift boat through Blossom with no problem at all and got to admire the walls of Coffee Pot while waiting for it to release us to contiue downstream. The low water made some of the upper Class II rapids much more challenging because of exposed rocks. Much pointing and yelling and a few bumps.
Lots of birds and bears. Great food and a fun group. We had boaters/rafters and we had hikers, and we rendezvoused for camp each night. The boats carried the camping gear for the hikers, so they were happy.
Maybe next time I'll go when the fish are in.
