bluewater was shot and needs prayer!

My friend and neighbor "bluewater" (Joel) was shot in a hunting accident two days ago.

He's had three surgeries but is still in critical condition and needs all the prayer he can get.

He was hunting with his brother and daughter when his brothers gun discharged somehow and hit Joel in the upper leg. He was life flighted to the hospital, died in transport, then was revived at the hospital.

All the info that I have I got from the neighbor on the other side of Joel so please excuse any in acuracies.

His mom said that he's hanging in there and that there is a chance that they may save his leg.

Joel has been to a few ifish functions so some of you may know him. I've known Joel for the last four years that we have been neighbors. we've hunted and fished together, coached our kids in sports together, and our daughters have been very good friends since they were 2.

I can't say enough about what a great guy Joel is. He's a very dedicated father and husband that loves the outdoors, but more often than not sacrifices his fishing and hunting time for family time and never complains about it.

Joel is the type of guy who doesn't allow alcohol on his boat, makes everyone wear there life vests at all times and even once lectured me about cutting my grass without hearing protection. So I was in complete shock to hear that he was party to an accident.

I'll post any new info for those who are interested and please pray for Joel he deserves it!

Bluewater...you got prayers from me and my son. My son met Bluewater, his daugter and brother while hunting above Timber Junction the morning of Oct. 11. Very sorry to hear of your misfortune, please GOD heal this man and soothe his family.

I just spoke with Joel's wife and he is still hanging in there. He will keep his leg, but there is no way to tell how much use it will be to him. The main concern is that he lost a lot of blood, he was given 20 units since the accident, I don't know what that means but I guess it's a lot. But he hasn't needed any blood in the last 24 hours which is a good sign.

Bad things really do happen to good people. I am hoping that Joel has a speedy and FULL recovery from this accident and hopefully his doctors are able to manage his pain well so that he is comfortable.

The following is an e-mail I received from Joel's mother-in-law at 10:00 am today. This is his 5th surgery believe.

Joel is in surgery at this moment. He is much more stable today than yesterday and yesterday was better than the day before. He won't be awake until Saturday or Sunday and is still in the ICU. Several neighbors are working to set up a Red Cross Blood Drive here in Vernonia in Joel's name and I am sure you will hear more about it soon. Someone has set up an account at the US Bank for their family. All the prayers have helped to make a difference. At every step of the way the doctors have been amazed at the positive outcomes of each concern. They attribute it to his young and healthy heart and body, but we know that the outpouring of prayers has contributed more than will ever be known. Thankyou to everyone for your care and concern.

I'll post more when I know more.

Let me check with her before e-mailing you the address. Last I heard they will wake him up on monday so anytime after that would be a good time to send it. Joel's wife is staying in the camper at the hospital so I don't see her coming and going much, and I am only "the neighbor guy" so I try not to pry. But I will get all the info I can as soon as I can.

update!!!

I got this today from Joel's mother-in-law.

Joel is going into surgery again around 5:00 PM this evening. This is a planned operation and he will probably have another on Wednesday. His recovery is continuing to go very well. I can't tell you how grateful we all are for all the good thoughts and prayers for him. He is talking more all the time, starting to tell the nurses how to do their job, trying to check his blood pressure and temp monitors himself, doing all the normal things we would expect from Joel. Jenny is holding up pretty well and the fact that she can see his eyes and hear him talk, even if he doesn't always make perfect sense because of the pain medications, is helping to carry her through. I'll continue to let you know how things are going.

Well it took a talented group of paramedics, including the life flight crew,a whole lot of caring nurses, many incredible doctors, 32 days in the hospital (7 of which spent unconsious in ICU),and most importantly help from the main guy upstairs so I can live to hunt another day! While I was in the hospital Jen mailed me a copy of the thread wishing me well and I must admit it brought me to tears. The one thing a guy does not realize until something like this happens is the outflowing of kindness and generousity from people in your lives and those you don't even know. I thank all of you for you thoughts and prayers and well wishes in my dire time of need.

I will follow soon with the "Rest of the story" but for now I am just thankful to still have my leg and to be alive.

I also just posted this on the hunting thread before I found this. But I would like to add that I firmly believe the only reason I survived this event is because God wanted me to. For all intents and purposes I was dead when I was transfered to the life flight crew and for some reason I was spared to live another day. I will spend the rest of my life a believer in the power of prayer and that our God is a merciful creator who has taken pity on a young husband, father and outdoorsman. For what reason I do not yet know, but I Praise him everyday for giving me a new life. Here is to the next 60 Years.
