Default Mossberg 500 and Duck Hunting

Hey all-

I'm in the process of trying to get another one of my friends addicted to duck hunting. Currently he has a Moss 500 with an 18" barrel. I've convinced him that he needs a 26" barrel, with choke options. Over the weekend he found some barrels for sale, however, they all had lead chokes. So he was asking me if he needed to get a set of chokes also, or if the lead ones would "fly" shooting steel. I wasn't aware there was much of a difference, and I just shot my Rem 870 straight out of the box(Not sure if those are lead or steel only...).

Anyone have experience with this? Please let me know what I should tell him.

Thanks!

Unless the chokes are extremely old (pre 85) I wouldn't worry about shooting steel through them. That said, even a brand new shotgun will tell you not to shoot anything tighter than a modified choke with steel through factory chokes. If he wants/needs a full choke, he will have to get an aftermarket one.

I agree with what the other guys say...one other quick thing to note is that a choke listed as modified for lead will be full for steel. If he is looking for another barrel...why not spend just a little more and get a new/used 870. I'm personally not too fond of the mossbergs and the 870 is a well proven gun.

I have killed countless ducks with a mossberg 500 , got it for my 18th birthday and still have it, we have a couple 870's and the mossberg shoots just as well.
