what sort of business? my wife advertises her daycare biz in the local paper and on craigslist. it has worked well for her.

if you were doing more of a service oriented biz..such as a plumber or landscaping, i would recommend the yellow pages.

I was a quarter page in the Yellow Pages for 10 years. Last four years downsized to a single line because I have a strong Contractor base and word of mouth is bringing in too much work. Once you are known, only about 5% of my business comes from Advertizing (Woodworking, cabinetry, countertops). I refer many of my calls to other contractors now.

im with detangle, but a good place to start is a website that you can build to your own desire then promote that, you will end up paying for the adds sooner or later but at least you will have a website to list on the advertiseing vehicle you decide to use later.yard sighns have been one of our best values(contractor)

For me it was networking. When I went on my own I tapped into the connections I had aquired over the years. I've also done some door to door sales. Tool & Die / Machine Shop.

It's not what you know....it's who know. The more people you do business with the more people you do business with.

Newspaper and radio, although radio hasn't really paid off. Also, local flyers and promotional things seems to work pretty well as do fund raisers for schools.
