Default Bear Encounter

I have been pounding the forest floor looking for Elk. This year has been really frustrating. Last year I seen Elk on at least half the days I hunted. This year I can't even find a fresh Turd. Saturday I did a nine mile hunt in some very remote terrian. At about 8:00 pm I had an encounter with two Black Bears. They were coming up the road and I was going down the road and niether of us would yield. I got my camera out and took about a dozen pictures. I ranged one of the bears at Forty yards. After I asked them to leave they just sat down in middle of the road. I called the a few names and finally one got up and turned broad side. A perfect forty yard shot. But I am Elk hunting not bear hunting and besides I don't have a tag. This is my first actual encounter in Oregon with Black Bears. I sort of expected them to run when they scented me but they did not. Fortunatly I was well armed. I didn't really feel a threat but after about Fifteen minutes it was time to proceede. It took a single shot from my pistol for them to get the idea that this was my road and they were on it.
I have pictures that I will try to post by tomorrow. My scanner is down and I am looking for parts.

Finally I seen some Elk. My chest started to hurt yesterday so I took a nitro and pulled up camp. There was a heard of Elk standing by the gate to say goodbye to me as I was leaving for home. SOB's

I'll be back !

This was the first photo before I realized my lens was fogged up.

This is after I started talking to them. This Bear just decided to sit down and wait for me to make the next move.

Like " This is my road and you are on it "

The perfect Forty yard broadside shot.

No Tag

What really surprized me about this encounter was their lack of fear. The fact the that Bear kept coming in my direction even after is spotted me. Then it sat down after I started talking to it. I had to use Smith and Wesson to get them to politely leave the road. Forty yards is close enough for me. Two to One I feel out matched. Glad I was packing.

My bet is a sow with last seasons cub. Notice the smaller bear is gone but the bigger bear is still there. If she is not woofing or poping her chops she is just buying time for her cub to gain some ground. If you don't shorten the ground on her she will just walk off. Sometimes the circle you just to make sure you are not a threat. So always watch behind you after something like this.
