Default Skunked on Tbay Salmon

Trolled the jaws through the afternoon flood tide to no avail. Saw only 2 fish caught. Then I went across the bar, and trolled an area within a mile of the jetties. There were lots of birds, lots of bait, and lots of fish on the meter, but no strikes. I was a bit disappointed because the reports had been pretty good for the day before.

What time did you fish relative to the tides? The reports I heard within an hour of low slack were several dozen fish caught in a 90 minute period, inside the jaws. I'd also heard the bar was closed yesterday.

High tide was at 7:15 pm, and I started fishing at about 1:30. After about 2:00, the bar was restricted to 16' and under.

Went out of the Nehalem and trolled around Twin rocks area the commerical trollers were there and the fish also had lock jaw? My input would be the upper level low that was present. We also tried the jaws in the afternoon and not 1 fish caught!! :depressed:

Major skunky. We were on the water by 8 or so. High tide was around 10. I think we saw 4 or so alllllll day. We did the north, the south, inside, outside, ghost hole, CG hole, 6 different stinks, mooches, hoochies, spinners, different dropper lengths, trolling speeds, nadda.

Fish counter at around 4pm said he'd counted 3 fish in at that time (at least for his shift).

We were a little bummed too compared to some recent reports.

That's fishin though!

Thanks Froggy. Excellent skipper and company on a very tidy boat to boot. We'll get em' next time!

do you guys think that cloudy water changes anything?

we were scuba diving out at 3 arches and at the jetty. It was my first time there, but guys I was with(who have dove there a lot!) said that it was the worst visability they had ever seen. You would have to put your bait in the salmons mouth for them to see it.

just a thought, wondering what you guys knew about that?

I was there alllll day on Saturday... no action for us whatsoever. In fact, around 2:00pm or so we got sick of fighting the seaweed and rigged up some light gear--starting casting small balls of eggs around the sow and pigs and got into some rock fish.

It was really tough going--I didn't see a single fish caught, and we trolled from the coast guard hole all the way out to the bar viewing stand and back half a dozen times.

It was disappointing, but managed a few crab out of the deal, just glad we had the pots.

While taking the boat out, we overheard an old salty looking guy say something about a Southwest swell killing the bite...I dunno...I talked to more than a dozen fishermen at the marina, didn't hear of a single fish caught.

Not sure about the answer to your question. I guess I didn't notice anything too terribly different about the visabilitiy than what I'm used to seeing, but I wasn't really tuned in to it.

I saw you guys out there and was curious what you were doing. One of you guys carried out a big bag of something. Abalone perhaps? Just wondering.

I was out there and witnessed the same thing. Decent on Friday, and then nothing really going on the next two days.

R-house- I saw you out there floating around on Friday. Only ifish sticker I saw on any boat this weekend.

Anyone think having the special commerical harvest in the bubbles of these river mouths might be slowing it down? 1000-3000 fish are alot to take out of a run, I have not seen any harvest numbers yet but could see how it could sloooow the fishing down .

Spoke with ODFW this morning. Sounds like less than 20 fish were caught over two weeks by commercials---no real effort on their part. There is some speculation about the really cold water walled up against the coast--possibly holding fish offshore with batches shooting through the cold and straight into the bays, hence the sporadic bite. Just speculation though.
